Day 8
There were only a few left in the camps at Hafsrfjord. Not many votes were needed to finalise on a candidate. At one point it seemed as if there would be a tie between Gyda Eiriksdottir and Karstein Lange Knudsson. This changed in the last minutes before the deadline and the votes were tied between King Rodulv of Romsdal and Karstein Lange Knudsson of Fjordane. Gyda was the one who would decide the vote. She couldn’t vote for the King so the vote ended in favour of Karstein.
It was Jardar Magnusson, king of Rogaland who brought the tally to the Hovgod. The Hovgod took one look at it and nodded to the king of Romsdal who lifted his bow and shot an arrow straight up into the air. The Hovgod turned to Karstein; so, they think you are responsible for the killing these last few nights. Do you have anything to say? Wait, never mind I doubt you have time to protest. As Karstein was about to open his mouth the arrow struck through his left shoulder and pierced his heart. He slumped to the ground dead.
The Hovgod grinned; now that is what I call a decent shot. The four remaining gathered around the corpse of Karstein. Jardar, king of Rogaland broke the silence first; I wonder if we got our man? Gyda looked up at his face; well I know you were running around half naked with that sword of yours. It is unmistakeable. You also killed Ragnar “the Anvil” last night. I was the only witness. Jardar went pale; no, you must be mistaken, I have no such recollection.
The Hovgod smirked; I must apologise. That was all my fault. I have been experimenting with new powerful berserkrgangr potions. Unfortunately they weren’t that good.
Well, said Jardar. What do we do now? It was Rodulv who answered; I think Gyda here needs to go back to her “betrothed” with the news that the west is taking up arms, and I’ll make sure the west meets him.. I guess we could meet here at Hafsrfjord?
Jardar cried; NO!! That is exactly what we were supposed to avoid. We can’t wage war now, it will tax or nations greatly.
That is the whole point. It was the Hovgod who replied. Jardar Magnusson looked from one face to the other bewildered. What? This is not... he began his iteration of what he had already stated. The Hovgod interrupted him; Oh be quiet maggot. He turned to Gyda; well Æge, is this not what we had agreed on? This will help you create that wonderful chaos that might lead to Ragnarok and I get my revenge on the pretentious Æsir. By the way, I think it is time that I go and use my skills on a certain invulnerable God. I really dislike all the attention he gets from the maidens.
Rodulv of Romsdal chuckled. Yeah, you are a master teacher of the bow, all though I think I am a natural. The Hovgod smirked; I doubt your skill, Surt, goes beyond fire and brimstone.
Rodulv countered; the arts of magic are not only given the Æsir. This was also taught us.
Jardar couldn’t believe his own ears. He wanted to get out of there to warn the kingdoms. But how? The others noticed his nervousness and grinned; I think our little human wants to be somewhere else? Both Gyda and Rodulv transformed into hideous monsters 10 feet tall. I guess we could help him. The Jotun called Ægir snapped up Jardar with one hand, nearly crushing him in his grip. The other one, Surt, uprooted a tree; We’ll help you, puny human. Ægir ran to the end of the beach, Surt following suit. Ægir stopped and yelled; Ready? Surt got to the beach, the tree in both hands, held like a giant club; Ready!!.
Ægir threw Jardar into the air in Surt’s general direction. Surt’s grip on the tree firmed and it caught fire. Jardar didn’t feel the impact more than a fraction of a second before he was gone. His broken remains flew like a fire ball towards the sky. The Jotun laughed hard, this was surly the most fun they have had in centuries. The Hovgod approached; Well lads, I take my leave. It was fun working with you guys. All the same to you Loki; replied Surt.
The Jotun transformed back to their human disguises and went separate ways. Ægir to find king Harald and Surt to gather the forces of the west.
Far up in Jotunheimen, a young girl named Gyda pounded on the large door that was the exit of her prison; let me out you bastards. I want to go home. I miss my father. A rumbling voice was heard from the outside; Soon my dear, soon...
Jotun victory!!!
