Not really, Google Wave is/was a platform mainly made for group work and projects, you could create (simple) text documents in it etc.
Google+ is a lot more like Facebook and other social networking sites from what I've seen so far.

I don't get it, why is an invite needed? I go the main page and I see this big 'JOIN' button.
Then I got an invite from this chap I know, and I clicked the link in the mail, and I reached the same page....
The horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight.
