I could've sworn that there was another thread about TW clones a while back....what's the matter people? Total War not good enough?!
Anyway, the only game that comes to mind at the moment is King Arthur -.....games...you might want to search it. They're a mix of TW and heroes.....more or less....
The horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight.
There's been threads about Real Warfare 1 & 2:

A sort of mount & blade / total war cross.

The poorest man may in his cottage bid defiance to all the forces of the Crown. It may be frail; its roof may shake; the wind may blow through it; the storm may enter; the rain may enter; but the King of England cannot enter – all his force dares not cross the threshold of the ruined tenement! - William Pitt the Elder
yeah i have hered of it

Pick one.
You are best off sticking to mods, Pharoah. I have not found a good clone. Some of the mods are quite inspired though - like the Third Age or EB.
The King Arthur Wargame is in my opinion better than the Total War series in many ways. The objectives you are given are related to an in-game story line that is actually quite demanding. It has very strong RPG elements relating to your generals and the economy is organized as more of a game separate from the military component. That is, you get to set your economy and expansion during one season, and then continue with the rest of the campaign for the remaining three.
People here say that it is hard and the magic is over powered. Well, I'll give in that the archers deal out damage like they are all armed with light machine guns and that "demonic" creatures are able to erase entire armies with ease, but they are just factors that you have to account for. You have use your own magic or magic negating powers to protect yourself. There are a lot of other tiny little nuances that your have to look out for to help you win. I had to restart the game twice because I just did not understand so many things. It was well worth it.
Also the path finding is better.

Lets start with the fact that 90% of the narration done by the little fruity Englishman narrator starts with HEAR MY WORDS M'LORD...............HEAR MY WORDS M'LORD.................HEAR MY WORDS M'LORD...............or heed, or whatever he said, I forgot exactly, other than it was annoying.
Second, the over powered magic in the game had a riduclous range. Yeah, yeah, go "anti-magic" right, which pretty much makes the game less about role playing and more about going the one route where you don't get raped from across the map by the evil magician who decimates you from Tinbuktu. As I recall, some generals didn't have much anti-magic so they were just screwed. Oh, and the "anti-magic" IIRC was also not passive, but was an active skill you had to use that times out, so you get to watch recharge timers and spam stuff. Don't mix spear phalanx warfare with magic
Third, I didn't like the way the strategic point on the maps were done. Park a general to recharge. Park a general to gain more money. Park a general to gain XP. I just didn't like it.
Fourth, the melee fights tooks too long, even with flanks and rear flanks, and normally I would not think this were such a bad thing except that there were magic skills that could decimate a unit in seconds, yet it takes my elite melee units 30 seconds to win a fight.
Fifth, the campaign mechanics were poorly done. While this is ultimately up to the player, I thought the campaign triggers were sloppy and if one wanted one could even level up to level whatever in the tutorial by camping in the xp spot and not moving for 50 turns.
I will be honest, I bought the game for eye candy and a little something different, but its lack of impression and outright annoyance made me quit just before I established my Capital. I think I had like 5 or 6 generals. I would have liked it more had it been a comedy. I can't imagine how bored I would have to be to ever play it again, but ya never know, I just downloaded XCOM UFO DEFENSE so anything is possible.
I find it superior to Total War in zero aspects.

For me, it was the fact he spoke so quietly. It almost made me sleepy.
I usually sent out a cheap unit and then withdraw the remains or sent out a super strong unit and spammed heal afterward. It made me pretty frustrated the first few times, but I ended up doing the same to the enemy. It was really fun once I got it.
Better than park a general... and wait for him to start diddling boys or get fat, which is what always happened in every single TW game I played. Every single general I had in MTW was gay. I didn't rely on piety, but I don't understand the trend.
There is that one fight in the lost monastery. It is in the woods, so it takes forever. If you boosted your magic, it should take no time it all. I always tricked the enemy into bunching up and then spam frost shards/whirlwind/dark shade/meteor/thunderbolt.
I think the quick timing of the game was to prevent players from just chilling in a castle boosting a general. The only time I was caught off guard was when Londinium started spawning hell things, when I had to go to the crystal tower in north seelie territory, or when the crusaders started cloning from the cathedrals. This really is the type of game you are meant to have an initial "rehersal" playthrough.
This is total war for me:
1.Attack city.
2.Build peasants.
3.Repeat.
This game had quests, an economy where choices actually mattered, characters I had to tweak for their specific function, and a few other little things. Yes, the game is over scripted and does not give you a chance to chill, but I think that improves the game. You ALWAYS have something to look out for. I realize that Total War has objectives, but they usually boil down to what I was going to do anyway.

Fair enough, I never got too far into the objectives aspect other than simple black or white mission choices.
Yes, using magic on the other guy was amusing, but it didn't make me feel any better about the entire process. There were ways to get around it using bait units, but I would not fall for that and neither should the AI, the AI should go for my most elite units like I did his. The first couple times I got hit with magic I had no idea what happened until I reloaded and watched more closely.
I agree that STW2 has very little in terms of missions. The "missions" you are given are frequently simply not possible or wise in your circumstances, such as take province X by turn Y and province X happens to be 6 provinces away and is owned by your ally. That was annoying.
But I did like the gay generals, almost as much as I liked the retard and ugly ones. I mean in all honesty, they probably were........
