The King Arthur Wargame is in my opinion better than the Total War series in many ways. The objectives you are given are related to an in-game story line that is actually quite demanding. It has very strong RPG elements relating to your generals and the economy is organized as more of a game separate from the military component. That is, you get to set your economy and expansion during one season, and then continue with the rest of the campaign for the remaining three.
People here say that it is hard and the magic is over powered. Well, I'll give in that the archers deal out damage like they are all armed with light machine guns and that "demonic" creatures are able to erase entire armies with ease, but they are just factors that you have to account for. You have use your own magic or magic negating powers to protect yourself. There are a lot of other tiny little nuances that your have to look out for to help you win. I had to restart the game twice because I just did not understand so many things. It was well worth it.
Also the path finding is better.
