You are right that reportedly a unit of phalangitai (a syntagma of 256 soldiers) used to be deployed in square 16 by 16 wide and deep.
However, a unit in RTW/EB is not supposed to represent a unit in RL, soldier per soldier. Consider that you can have just 20 x 240 or 4800 soldiers on any battlefield at the high maximum, while in history battles easily involved tens of thousand soldiers. Therefore it is IMO quite right to represent this with thinner ranks and more rectangular deployment. Deploying phalanxes in 16 deep ranks would make the line too short and the game-play unbalanced given the limitations of RTW engine.![]()
