Thread: Chain mail in Apamea

    Default Chain mail in Apamea

    Hi there!
I'm currently doing some research on the use of chain mail in hellenistic armies as part of my master's thesis, and I just came across a thread in this forum, in which Teleklos made some interesting remarks. I quote:

"The mail facemask first appears in northern spain, then moves into syria, presumably by way of mercenaries. There are some crude figures from spain, and a very nice relief that the syrian government has under lock and key in damascus. (The reason the chain veil/mask itself has not been published yet is) because the british fellow doing work at the site where it was found hasn't gotten around to publishing it in the last 10 years (the site is at Apamea). (It was in the context of other equipment that seems to belong to a very well equipped unit, possibly) guards of the governor."

I'vent been able to verify any of the information given. Any additional information, description or photograph of the relief in Damascus and the chain mail from Apamea would be greatly appreciated. My thesis is on the well-known painted grave steles from Sidon. One of the deceased, Salmas from Adada, is clad in chain mail.

    Cheers

I think the mail from Iberia might refer to a simple and stylistic drawing like often seen on vases. Not unlike these:

Some claim that drawings like these, like the horse above, represent mail. Most don't. I don't know about specific mail veils found in archaeology or depictions of it though. As far as I know we will not have mail facemasks in Iberia. Oudysseos is our Iberian historian, maybe he has read about it.

On the findings of Apamea I can't tell you much either. This information probably was only avaible to one of our former mod leaders, Urnamma, who had a phd in Archaeology. He sadly is no longer with us. Perhaps Paullus knows about it though, he's our main historian and expert.

Btw interesting subject for a thesis! Good luck with it.
