I do get an odd message when I attempt to open minecraft.jar:
Failed to load Main-Class attribute manifest
Any clue what that means? I noticed all the other .jars have the same message.
===EDIT===
Would simply deleting the old minecraft.jar and then moving the new into the same place, then renaming it minecraft.jar work?

You probably did what I did. Tried to replace the .exe with the .jar
What you do is simply replace one of the sub files with that.
