I hear the giants have a frequent flyer club...

I've yet to attempt taking on a giant or a mammoth for that matter. However, I did witness an interesting battle with a dragon taking on two giants, a mammoth and a sabre-tooth tiger. The main battle took place on a plateau of sorts with small cliff drop-offs at several places around the edge. I could see the dragon was swooping and attacking something as I approached and then noted one giant was hiding behind some trees. Right after seeing the hiding giant, the second giant disengaged from the dragon and ran down and hid along one of the cliffs while the dragon continued to fight the mammoth and/or tiger (I didn't have a clear enough view to see exactly what the dragon was fighting until I found the bodies later). After a brief rest, the one giant hiding behind the cliff, ran along it and then charged at the dragon from another direction. Again, I couldn't see the action on the plateau fully but soon the dragon went silent and the giants walked away. I ran up to the scene of the battle and found the dead dragon there...and found myself taking in the dragon soul. Thanks giants!

Some combo of attacks makes things go flying in this game. Last night I found this Orcish shock sword that was making the weaker Forsworn go flying up in the air or fus roh dah style knock back.

I believe that I read somewhere that when someone is hit by a killing blow the remaining damage that didnt get absorbed by the creature's hit points get's converted to momentum. So if you hit them with the infinity+1 sword when they have only 1 hp left they go flying. Dont quote me on this though.

...I wonder if I modded in a cheat sword I could get the enemy so high they end up bouncing off ceiling of the world's invisible walls.

Being better than the worst does not inherently make you good. But being better than the rest lets you brag.

That's correct, good sir, and it's the reason for giants being able to send you into orbit; apparently they're Lvl.32 at the start of the game (their mammoths are Lvl.38, allegedly) and you would have neither the hitpoints nor mitigation to shrug off their attacks at that stage in the game, you're instantly killed when hit, even on Novice difficulty. The sheer amount of damage they deal over one's health limit is enough to send your lifeless body ragdolling through the air.

This is technically a glitch in the way the system handles damage calculations, but Bethesda have maintained that they'll keep glitches in the game if they're funny, as this one is. Never gets old for me, at least.

I've killed two mammoths in one battle once while hiding in some ruin. The mammoths couldn't enter and I simply shot at them from the inside.

As for giants, they don't seem to like water. I ran away from one once, into a river. I noted he didn't follow me, but just kept standing there, yelling at me. So, I slowly swum back to a spot where I could stand, but still out of reach from his club. Many arrows took care of him. For a rocket scientist, he didn't seem the brightest bulb to me.

Despite what I said about not playing the game again, it drew me back :(

I have to admit I have never managed to kill either a mammoth or a giant. Kiting seems to be the best way , but I'm just not that good at it. A hit and run melee attack almost worked, but I zigged when I should have zagged and was rewarded with a bird's eye view of the area.

Quirky behaviour seems to be the rule. I have battled dragons with their aid; after such battles it's a coin toss whether they quietly walk away or chase me. At least they have personality :)

Your highest upgraded knockback shout (the meme generating "fus-rho-dah") will knock giants clean off their feet and send them flying backwards. Once you're around level 15-20, you can capitalize on this by running up to them and BEATING THEIR BRAINS OUT before they recover. That should take about 50% of their life, then its all about the footwork. Engage them on ground where you can dance them around and avoid their massive strikes. Sprinting and jumping out of the way is the best way to avoid a hit, since even crazy decked out, if they hit you with their rocket club its a 1 hit k.o

I've killed two giants at once before using the shout dodge and strike method.

There used to be a glitch where chickens could report crimes. I think they should have made a chicken that looked like an english bobby that wanders the map looking for crime to report. When he see's you commit a crime it should run up to you and shout, "STOP RIGHT THERE, BA-KAWWWK, CRIMINAL SCUM!"

If you opt in (via Steam), 1.4 is up as BETA for Skyrim.

Both the author of performance boosters and users confirm that they experience the highest FPS gain with 1.4.

Make sure you make backup for your saves considering this is labeled "Beta" for a reason.

Completely agree! The way they mix goofy in-game stuff with real-life is great; I still laugh when I picture Gregethor's "aid" with the basket over his head :)

    Nice song.

He's also done this DA2 song which actually manages to make DA2 and Hawke's bumbling around sound epic.

I hope everyone is following the adventures of Felix the Peaceful Monk. Four parts so far, explaining a purely pacifist run of Skyrim.

    Thank you for that Lemur!

It's good to see someone trying something quite different. That is actually a playstyle I thought about but rejected for the same reasons he goes over: expensive spells; leaving a living crowd on the path you may have to walk again. Kudos to him for having the courage to do it, and the ability to make it work :)

The Skyrim creation kid (modding tool kit) has an automated system which uploads mods to Steam. Players can install mods by selecting them on Steam, and Steam will handle the installation itself, and keep all mods up-to-date as new versions are released. This is quite possibly the greatest modding news I have ever heard. If this works well, it means that the single most frustrating aspect of modding Bethesda games is now a thing of the past.

When I saw the Bethesda video on this yesterday I started to like Steam; just as I was worried about where I could find great mods. I've had so many problems with M2 mods. This will take the worry away.

Yes, I noticed when Skyrim with Skyboost wouldn't run last night. I uninstalled Skyboost and launched the game. I noticed framerate improvement better than that provided by Skyboost: Whiterun fps with Skyboost was about 19 and with 1.4 alone was 25. However, as I travelled along roads, the movement was not fluid despite the higher framerates. Often the movement would ever-so-slightly pause every couple of seconds - enough to be annoying. There were no other processes running that should have interfered with Skyrim. I should have re-booted just to see if that mattered as I haven't done so for a couple of days. I'll do so tonight.

Would you guys be interested in me posting an AAR about my orc? I have it over at twcenter.net. If not here where would be a good place to place aars for skyrim?

When I saw your name in the Skyrim thread, my immediate thought was "bug him to do an AAR." Our TreasAARy is not quite as active as TWC, but you'll get a loyal following for a well written AAR, which yours always are.

Off to TWC to check it out.

horrorview from SkyrimNexus has a tiny collection of "Sexy" re-texturing collections for villages and towns, followed by Riften, Windhelm and Winterhold College for now, upon the success of the first.

"Sexy" stuff, although improving dumbed-down textures is an attraction indeed, raised my eyebrow since I wondered if warmer colours would spoil the intended ambiance of the game. You know the color palette must have been chosen carefully for an atmospheric game like this. If any of you dares trying, let me know about your thoughts on the mod.
