    Default The black ship

Has anyone managed to capture it or knows where it roams around? I got the message and just gathered 2 fleets north and south of Honshu and waited for it. I got a glimpse at it but it ran away and I did not see it since (this was during a Coop campaign).

It pretty much goes along the south coast of the islands then goes off map somewhere around where the Date start. It comes back every few years if you miss it, I think it has epic move points so if it passes you it's hard to catch up.
I've managed to capture it as well, it took me the Nihon Maru, 3 o ataka Bunes, couple of seige tower bunes and huge number of bow kobaya, I lost every ship except one o ataka bune but once you got the black ship, you will never, ever, ever have trouble at sea again.

    Hey SP4

Actually, the easiest way to capture the Black Ship is to engage it with pairs of Medium Bunes.
Primarily, this guarantees it will stay and fight.
Now, you auto-resolve each encounter; the Black Ship will register losses of approximatively 80 men after each engagement. That's how the auto-resolves works. Thus, around the time you'll send the fourth pair of Medium Bunes, you should capture it.

    Good luck with it

I used a single Nanban trade ship to capture the Black Ship. I thought I was doomed when an AI clan attacked me with a fleet comprising of the Black Ship and several other Japanese style ships. I found that positioning my lone ship upwind and broadside on to the approaching Black Ship allowed me to pour broadside after broadside into it as it approached. If the Black Ship is heading into the wind it becomes very slow, a great big wallowing target. Right about the point it began to turn ready to open up with its own broadside my musketeers were able to open up, pouring volleys into the enemy crew. Soon after they surrendered, without managing to fire a single cannon. Mopping up the other ships was easy. I imagine a similar strategy would work for any version of the Black Ship, the main problem being the need to convert to Christianity. Nanbans have good movement range on the campaign map too, particularly if you take that first naval range art.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I will try that thing with the medium bunes.

Do you have to convert to Christianity to capture it or just to be able to repair it? I read that you need a Nanban port to replenish it.

Nope, you do not need to convert to Christianity. Once you have it, just send it to one of your harbours for repairs.

yeah, like froggy said, the best way to capture it is to use a nanban trade ship. that's how i got it. i just retreated behind a rock, took a few shots before it turned to fire, and then got behind the rock again. if you can close it in, and position your ship so that you don't get shot, you can just make them surrender with musketfire.

I found it. Apparently the Oda captured it and it now has a load of other ships accompanying it >_>

I've tried with regular ships before, and lost 2 stacks. However I started thinking how to do it without the Nanban Trade ship:

I was Mori, and waiting for the event, with 2 stacks of ships to the south, pillaging trade routes. The black ship is super fast, and I dont think any ship can catch it on the campaign map. So my ships was just waiting for it in the south sea.

My first stack engages with reinforces of the second (that I really did not need anyhow). In my attacking stack I had 3 Mori Sengoku Bunes and 5 Mori Heavy Bunes. I do no prebattles on autoresolve, just dive in against its full health with manual control. I line up all my ships, on a long line right infront of the black ship, with the spear ship of 1 Sengoku Bune (to be sacrificed). I forgot to screenshot that so here is a cute drawing:
    [] <-- Black ship

    -clash-

    | <-- Sengoku
    () <-- Heavy Bunes
    ()
    ()
    ()
    ()
    | | <-- Sengoku x2

Those Sengoku's are very fast, and it quickly reach the blackship from the front, before it can turn and fire. I do a boarding right away, trying to keep it busy until my main fleet arrives. A little fail on that, as it decides to turn around first, and gets a solid broadside. However my first Heavy Bune reach the blackship from the front (safe place really), and I use extra speed on that and engage in a bording also right away, as the first Sengoku starts diving. Once I get the blackship hooked up, it has to do the fight before it can get free to use her cannons again. However, the Heavy Bune has some 130 crew, and before they are even half killed, all my other ships arrive, and I also get the cooldown on warcry ready. I use that on the first ship engaged, and all the other ships are firing from all sides with arrows. This is so effective, that the Heavy Bune wins and captures the Black ship just as the first reinforcements arrive.

Some cannon or fire bomb ships would have been sweet too, if they can come in late when the black ship is engaged in boarding. Note, the upkeep on the blackship is extreme. And I pretty much plan to send all my other ships to the bottom, except my black ship and some key Nanban Trade ships. They can guard anything, against anything.
