Archers. Help please?

How do I get archers to engage in melee? I've tried holding down the alt key to no affect. Have they changed something I'm not aware of since MTW2? (Never played Empire) The only time it works is when my archers are already shooting at an enemy unit if I put the cursor over them I get the sword Icon to attack melee.

The default key for switching between missiles and close-combat weapons is F.
You can of course change it to whatever you wish in the Options panel.

There is a button on the lower right panel when you select archers. It is like 2 crossed swords. That is melee mode.

I think it sucks that they made this whole separate melee mode for ranged units, I liked the alt-click way, it was easy and when you wanted to attack again with range you don't have to keep turning it off again.

How many of you guys have ordered an attack only to have your archers run in and attack with swords and get killed because you forgot to turn melee off?

Thanks for the help. I agree I think the old way to attack melee was better. If it aint broke dont fix it!

Old controls that you are used to are always better than new ones =p The melee button was around since ETW though.
