So the Org is into that sort of thing now?

It is currently under discussion and testing by the staff. The postbit info is only visible because there is no way to test that aspect of it in a manner which is not visible to the general membership. The function is not currently active in any public area of the forum.

I like to think the Org has some nice manners and thanking people for any particularly good posts is an interesting area.

These thanks however won't be public or used as a quasi-reputation system, it would basically be "Some one appreciated this post of yours", so if anything, it is just a nice thing to log into, knowing that a particular post of yours was well received.

It is in the "Can the forum be able to handle such a system?" stage and the tech-admins are working on the available options to see what can be done.

So bake the admins a chocolate cake?

On a more serious note the downside of a thanks/reputation system on a forum like this is that it encourages meaningless spam posts of the “+ rep” type...

The system we are working on has no possible way of being considered a ranking or reputation system. We are very much aware of the negative aspects of such a system and we have no intentions of introducing any features that would have that kind of effect.

Our Tech Admins are trying to tweak it to avoid exactly that. We don't want a "rep" system here at the .Org. What we do want, is creating something that allows members to easily give recognition to another member who made an excellent post. People are sometimes hesitant to make a simple "thank you" post, because they're afraid to clutter the thread. That has the unfortunate side effect that the member who made the excellent post/contribution doesn't know that plenty of people are actually grateful for it and perhaps that may give said member the feeling that his efforts aren't being appreciated by the community.

What we want is something that allows members to express thanks for an excellent contribution and that makes people making excellent contributions feel aware that it is being appreciated very much. But then without the less wanted element of it becoming something like a reputation system or something that may create distinctions or ranks among members.

I wonder if the thanks could be made so only the member receiving them can see them.

I'm glad that some of the considerations we've made and the concerns we had are expressed here.
Unfortunatly, it's hard to answer just now as the function is still being tweaked and certain things may still change.

The Thank function is now available in all fora. You can find the button on the bottom left of every post but your own. Clicking Thanks will add a small Thank You line to the bottom of the post, below the signature area. If there is already at least one Thank You on a post, your name will be added to the list of thanks. The list of names will switch over to a hidden format with a button to reveal them when it goes over 6 thanks. You can remove any Thanks you have given at any time by clicking the Remove Thanks link on the right side of the Thanks box. You can find links to all posts where you have given and received thanks in the Statistics section of your profile, under the About Me tab.

Feedback is welcome. Aspects of this function may be modified depending on the responses we receive.

I have thanked the post above this one to demonstrate what the Thanks display box looks like.

Yes, am I supposed to click the Remove All link next to your thanks list? Come to think of it, am I supposed to even see it?

EDIT: Funny thing, that: I can click it and the forum will appear to delete one but on page refresh it reappears. So it's not that much of an issue, fortunately.

Thanks for pointing that out. You must be getting access to that function due to your EB moderation privileges. I'll figure out how to prevent that.

[edit]Hmm... actually, that can't be it. Looking at the code, I have no idea why you can see that link, even if it doesn't work. Can you PM me the page source for the section that displays it?

That makes sense. In the backroom I sometimes come across posts that I entirely agree with and which pretty much contain all the arguments for it - leaving me with nothing to add except "I agree", in which case I simply don't post.

Can we have a counter on our personal page of how many thanks we have given out?

Just FYI, I'm showing as having thanked posts that I didn't.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Well that used to be this thread (you'll note I took your post as subject for a test) but I can't see the link anymore either. Maybe someone else on the forum staff fixed it?

Yeah, I am not seeing Kalizec's signature on other posts of his.

Yes, the problem was traced back to a partial code change we had tried during testing which somehow did not get reverted. It was making the admin function visible to some people, though not useable. The problem has been fixed.

Never forget that Kralizec used to play for the green team, so doubtless he picked up tips from Andres there.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

But it's easy: it's called changing your signature. Because the Post Quick Reply & Edit commands don't fully reload the page, signatures of posts won't be reloaded either. This opens up scope for a wide array of mind tricks involving erasing your signature, and then putting a new “Thanks” stanza back and making a post in less time than it takes PJ or ACIN to edit/quick-reply.
