Shogun Nostalgia

The old shogun feeling cought me late and lasted only for a few days. How do you feel about it?

I know that rap is not accepted as music by many and french rap even less liked but I remember listening "L'Ecole du micro d'argent" by IAM and "La Garde Meurt, Mais Ne Se Rend Pas" (more for Napoleon) by FAF LARAGE & SHURIK'N on "Chroniques De Mars" and looking for more movies like "ran". I also googled (yes, it was already the default search engine) and read more about that time. What did or do you do to boost the "total war" feeling of the sengoku jidai?

Footnote: Don't get mislead by the cover of "L'Ecole du micro d'argent". The tracks have nothing to do with the samurai. Only in 2 songs there is a kind of association of rapping and fighting, but that's all. There is no link to the game either, I just had the CDs (liked them much then) as I bought the game.

So are there Japanese rappers? that's a truly weird thought.

I read Japanese novels (in English translation)- medieval classics like the Tale of the Heike, more modern ones like Yoshikawa's Taiko (the rise and fall of the Oda as seen through the eyes of Hideyoshi - very long and rather old fashioned but has a very STW feel with shinobi sabotaging castles, armies being bribed, Ikko Ikki being revolting... ).

While I love chanbara movies only Ran and Kagemusha do the battles properly.

I really liked Taiko, far better than Musashi IMHO.

You may also like Samurai Banner of Furin Kazan which is about Yamamoto Kansuke and Takeda Shingen. There is a movie adaptation from the late 60's but I've never seen it.

Shogun is a classic, altough the more I read about the period the more I would prefer Clavell used the real historical personalities.

Just reread Taiko but ended up skimming through the last chapters which just have endless campaigning against Shibata Katsuie.

Would have been amusing to see his take on the great dictator who launched the semi-genocidal invasion of Korea and slaughtered his nephew's entire family.
