On northeast side of the field, Andras a zah nembol (Ignoramus) begins to fall asleep. The same cannot be said for Demeter az Aba nembol (Zim). The veteran warrior moves quickly against Sam the Squire (Nightbringer), before the latter can fall back. There is a clash of swords as Demeter strikes high and Sam parries his blow. Demeter is fast, though, very fast, and he swings at the young man again and again and again. Eventually, one of the blows gets past Sam's defense. Demeter's sword lands hard on Sam's helmet, and the blow knocks the squire momentarily senseless. His horse wheels backwards a few paces.

On the southwest side of the field, the father and son duo of Bökény a Huntpaznan nembol (Mithridate) and Bökény a Hahold nemböl (Mithridate) put spurs to their horses and charge forward, attempting to finish off Kerecse a Geregye nembol (The King). Kerecse anticipates the movement, however, and simply dodges to the side, letting his opponents' momentum carry them beyond him. Bökény a Huntpaznan nembol (Mithridate) cranes his neck, watching Kerecse's movements as he rides past. At the last moment, he looks forward and notices the dazed Sam the Squire (Nightbringer) right in his path. His horse balks as Sam's horse stumbles into his path, averting an unintended melee.

    Initiative Move Order:

    1. Kerecse a Geregye nembol (The King)
    2. Andras a zah nembol (Ignoramus)

    5. Sam the Squire (Nightbringer)
    6. Bökény a Huntpaznan nembol (Mithridate)
    7. Bökény a Hahold nemböl (Mithridate)

    Melee 1:
    Demeter: Sword/High
    Sam: Sword/High
Both weapons and stances are a draw, no advantages.
Raw die rolls: Demeter (6,1,1) Sam (3)
    Demeter wins.

"Kerecse, face me! Lets show these old men a proper fight!"

As the young lord charged off Bokeny reined in a few paces from Sam the squire, eyes burning with rage and hatred

"Your master offends me, spits on my honor and offends my people. Seeing as he is too much of a craven to face me in battle i shall have to settle with you.
I Bökény a Huntpaznan nemböl, challenge you into a duel to the death, show that you are not as low as Ludolf and face me like a man!"

Sam grits his teeth, still reeling from Demeter's blow, and looks towards Bokeny.

I'm no coward Bokeny. I'll stand against you and show that Sicilians do not flee from danger, like certain Hungarian Kings. I heard how he fled Constantinople, and now he hasn't even the courage to attend a tourney!

If your bloodthirsty pagan ways demand it be to the death, very well, God shall be my shield and my blade, have at the!

With these words, Sam spurs his horse towards Bokeny.

    Battle rages across the arena.

The veteran Demeter az Aba nembol (Zim) reacts first, edging around Sam and Bökény, who are clearly intent on killing one another. Demeter is wary of them, and prepared to cut them down if they come his way, but for the moment he is content to let his opponents waste their energy on each other. There is fire in the eyes of Bökény a Huntpaznan nembol (Mithridate) and Sam the Squire (Nightbringer), but Sam is faster on his feet, and charges into the elder Bökény. He is weak from his injury though, and the Bökény is a seasoned warrior. Bökény parries Sam's attack and then skillfully slashes back... with sharpened steel. The first cut slices through the hardened leather at Sam's left shoulder, while the second pieces him through the side. He gives out a shout of pain, and falls to the ground, with Bökény standing above him, his blade still raised and dripping blood...

The younger Bökény a Hahold nemböl (Mithridate) is not about to let his father do all the fighting, and he turns and charges straight for Kerecse a Geregye nembol (The King), before Kerecse can make another attempt to dodge away. The charge is mighty indeed, and Kerecse is caught completely off-guard. With a tremondous blow, Hahold slams his lance into Kerecse's shoulder and throws him from the saddle, into the arena wall. The combatant falls heavily against the wall and collapses into a heap of crumpled armor. Attendants rush to his side to tend to his injuries, and then begin to drag him from the field.

Demeter az Aba nembol (Zim) is watching Bökény and Sam with alarm. Just as he considers moving forward to intervene, a most unexpected thing happens. Andras a zah nembol (Ignoramus) suddenly awakens from his stupor and charges directly into Demeter's rear. Demeter's horse hears the approach, and bucks, turning its rider's attention to the impending threat at the very last moment. Andras' lance goes wide of the mark, and Demeter hammers him with several wicked blows as he rides past. Severely bruised and battered, Andras circles back around and gives the veteran warrior some space.

    Initiative Move Order:

    1. Demeter az Aba nembol (Zim)
    2. Sam the Squire (Nightbringer)
    3. Bökény a Huntpaznan nembol (Mithridate)

For an instant a shimmer of sorrow flickered in Bokenys eyes but it was quickly replaced with cold determination.

    "You know nothing, boy"

The sword stroke is quick, cutting deep into the of the Squires throat whom quickly began bleeding to death in convulsions.
Bokeny quietly observes for a while, before once again turning to face the melee.

Hahold is appalled at the juniors king reaction and the killing of a fellow christian in cold blood. The squire could scarcely have been older than himself, as he struck down Keresce he had turned around to see Bokeny deliver the killing blow in what was supposed to be a mere beat down.

But seeing the expression on Bokenys face he held his tongue, gripping his lance and charged blindly at Bokeny and Demeter alike.

Bökény a Hahold nemböl (Mithridate), having finally finished off Kerecse, wheels his horse about and charges into the midst of battle, directly in between Demeter az Aba nembol (Zim) and Bökény a Huntpaznan nembol (Mithridate). The charge is aimed at Demeter, but Hahold is clearly making no efforts to avoid injuring his former battle partner. Both men turn to engage the injured rider as he charges between them. Hahold thrusts his lance forward with a vicious jab, but the sudden attack does not phase Demeter, who calmly adapts his stance to counter Hahold's. He parries the blow almost effortlessly, then ripostes with a slash that dents Hahold's armor and makes him cry out in pain. The young man is hearty though, and he keeps his saddle... but not for long. His father turns about and gives his son a quick lesson in the art of war. Sword thrusts come with blinding speed, and the young Hahold is soon overwhelmed. Throwing his son off-balance, Bokeny deftly dodges a blow and then drops low and cuts one of his son's stirrups. His support gone, the boy topples out of his saddle and crashes to the ground, clearly finished for the day.

Andras a zah nembol (Ignoramus) sits back watching the show, apparently attempting to recover from the beating he had just received.

With the arena quickly emptying of combantants, Bökény a Huntpaznan nembol (Mithridate) turns his attention to the skilled Demeter az Aba nembol (Zim). Bokeny moves obliquely, attempting to skirt around Demeter and edge towards the injured Andras, but Demeter is warily standing his ground and does not back off as Bokeny had anticipated. As Bokeny rides near, Demeter slashes at him. A melee of incredible skill begins, with slash, parry, and riposte coming from each man in a seemingly endless torrent. Eventually, though, Bokeny drops low under Demeter's high swing and connects against Demeter's left hip. The veteran warrior grunts and pulls back a few paces, eyeing his opponent carefully.

With Haholds right arm being completely useless and having hit the ground hard, he struggled to get up from the ground in his armor. As he propped himself up to a sitting position with searing pain seemingly everywhere he noticed his horse backing up against the now lifeless squire, threatening to trample the body. Not wanting such an unworthy fate to befall him he grasped his lance again and sent the horse reeling with a poke. Unfortunately causing it to throw over a couple functionaries who where rushing to aid him and remove the body.

Despite this his adoptive father was seemingly paying no heed to anything besides the other participants, so with a curse he fell unconscious in the dirt.

The three remaining combatants stood in a triangle, eying each other warily. Bokeny stared at Demeter, Demeter stared at Andras, and Andras drooled on himself. The stand-off was broken by Demeter az Aba nembol (Zim), who moved forward and right, around the left flank of Bökény a Huntpaznan nembol (Mithridate). Bokeny turned to face Demeter, turning his back on the seemingly comatose Andras. Demeter came on quickly, his sword a blur. Bokeny paried easily at first, but Demeter picked up speed and soon Bokeny was having difficulty blocking his opponent. In desperation, Bokeny switched to offense and lunged in with a mid-height blow, but it was anticipated. Demeter shifted left, and brough his sword down from on high, slamming into Bokeny's gorget. Bokeny coughed and gasped for air, and stumbled backwards.

(OOC: Apologies for the delay, I was... uh... well, I was drinking wine and watching television. )

With Andras a zah nembol (Ignoramus) continuing to drool on himself in the center of the arena, Demeter az Aba nembol (Zim) and Bökény a Huntpaznan nembol (Mithridate) squared off for one final charge. Both combatants were moderately injured, though Demeter had the advantage of having struck the most recent blow. There were a few moments of silent stillness, as the men stared each other down, looking for an opening. Demeter moved first, moving quickly to his right and forward, once again forcing Bokeny to shift his stance to put his back towards Andras. Demeter came in hard, striking boldly with his sword, going for a disabling blow. The sheer power behind his swings was startling, and Bokeny used all his strength to control his shield and fend off the assault. Yet Demeter's rain of steel never slackened. Steel clanged on wood time and time again, until eventually Bokeny's shield shattered. With one final, mighty blow, Demeter's sword crashed into Bokeny's left ribs. There was a sickening crunch, and the veteran warrior was thrown from his saddle. He lay in the dirt, panting, for a few moments, then slowly rose to his feet, clutching his injured side. Demeter eyed him warily, but Bokeny only bowed his head, and turned to walk out of the arena, the only man to leave under his own power so far.

With Bokeny defeated, Demeter looked up at Andras. The largely comatose stared blankly back at him for a few moments, before looking down, confused, at his own mailed fist. Suddenly, Andras surged with a vicious blow, putting all his remaining strength into one final effort. The punch landed... on his on chin, and he crumpled from the saddle in a heap. The attendents came out to drag his sorry form from the arena.

Demeter az Aba nembol (Zim) remained the last man standing in the arena. The entire audience erupted in cheers that seemed to go on for hours.

    Initiative Move Order:

    1. Demeter az Aba nembol (Zim)
    2. Bökény a Huntpaznan nembol (Mithridate)
    3. Andras a zah nembol (Ignoramus)

Orders were not received from Ignoramus. Melee 1 was fought as normal based on orders. Melee 2 would not have occurred this round, but as the contest was down to two people, movement no longer mattered and Ignoramus was chronically inactive, so I simply resolved it.

The Junior King leads the applause for the victorious Demeter. His attendants approach and whisper in his ear and, with a final shout of 'Bravo!' he leaves the square to prepare for the prize giving ceremony.

As the applause dies down, and everyone is starting to head for the ceremony, a lone rider approaches the grounds. He is drenched in blood, and several arrows still protrude from the broken links of his chainmail. As he draws within hearing, he cries out, panting from his obvious exhaustion.

    The King is dead!
There was an ambush... Cuman dogs... came out of the woods... nothing we could do.

The man topples off his horse, grunting as he collides with the ground before struggling to his feet. As he stands, his gaze sweeps over the crowd, stopping on Junior King Bokeny momentarily.

The only way they could have known our King could have been there is if there was an informant. Someone told those Cuman dogs how to get to the King, and I myself wouldn't trust any Cuman, whether he claims to have converted or not.

He glares at Petur az Akuz nembol briefly, before locking his gaze on the Wolf.

After a few moments however, he wavers, and collapses unconscious on the ground.

The Junior King is frozen in place, his gaze locked on the lone rider where he lies in the dust for a long moment.

With a start, he regains his wits and bellows at his attendants.

Get this man some help! A leech, immediately, and some wine! Water! He must live to tell his tale in more detail.

Bokeny's bodyguard gather the unconscious man in their arms and bear him aloft out of the square and into the castle keep.

Istvan of Carniola is at the Junior King's side. He puts an arm around his liege's shoulders and leads him up onto the raised wooden dais from which he opened the tournament. The Junior King has a strange look on his face, a mixture of confusion and something else which it is impossible to discern. He seems a million miles away as Istvan shouts out to the crowd:

    The King is dead....

    ...and then, holding his master's arm aloft;

    LONG LIVE THE KING!

Demeter was saluting the crowd and drinking in the last few bits of applause when the announcement was made. Stunned, he dismounted and pulled off his dented helmet, letting it fall from his fingers. Weaving his way through attendants and fellow nobles, fighting a limp from an injury he didn't remember receiving, he makes his way to his new liege. With a grunt of pain he kneel before him, offering his sword.

Bokeny looks down at Demeter. He reaches out and takes his sword, holding it aloft for a moment so that the sun glints off the battle-worn steel before flipping it with a competent action and proffering the hilt to the older man.

Arise, Demeter as Aba nembol, Groef of Kassa and victor of the Tournament of Varad.

The older man takes the blade and sheathes it, rising to his feet but still with his head bowed slightly. Bokeny continues.

Grand old servant of the Magyar, long have your family defended the realm against the tribes of the northern plain. You fought with honour on the side of mine uncle Mate in the long struggle which consumed our peoples and, as the torch passed to Pozsony my cousin, you maintained your fealty.

At one time we would have been sworn enemies but now, in the sight of the people of Hungary and as my first action as King, I shall accept your pledge of loyalty and reward you with the honour of being my heir - if I should die before my son comes of age, you shall rule as Regent until he is able to bear the crown upon his head.

By this action I hope to signal that I bear no grudge to any man who fought against my father or myself in the blood feud. It is ended and the land is at peace. Let all men here acclaim the memory of King Pozsony and celebrate his deeds in song!

Glancing over to Hahold whom was still unconscious, Bokony clasped his broken ribs with one arm and moves forward.

"I told him to beware when crossing our lands, the cumans are yet to be driven out..." He grumbles
Falling heavily to one knee in front of the king, offering his still bloody sword hilt first to Bokeny

Bokeny takes the blade from Bokony and with the same assured flick of the wrist inverts it and offers it back.

Arise Bokony a Huntpaznan nembol, Groef of Brasov and victor of Halych. You are right that there is much to do and I will need every good man here to do it! I accept your fealty. Your valour in this tournament has not gone unnoticed by mine eye.

Nodding now to Kerecse and returning him his blade likewise.

    Arise Kerecse a Geregye nembol.

Your loyalty has been unquestioned and in return for it I will grant you the title of Groef of Zagreb. I will move my seat to the capital and that Croatian burg is in dire need of a defender against the Venetians. Keep it well! I also grant you the troops there garrisoned for your personal army.

Bokeny rose but kept his head low, with his right hand now clutched over his heart.

"You honor me my king, Hahold and I will serve you well"

Turning to face the surrounding people and nobles alike, he lifts his head and loudly proclaims:
    "The king is dead!"

Thrusting his sword into the air, a few drops of blood is sent flying.

    "LONG LIVE THE KING!"

Bokeny once more, to the assembled crowd of nobles and commoners.

The body of King Pozsony will be recovered and will lay in state for one month.

Out of respect for his memory there will be no public coronation to mark the start of my reign. Instead there will be a simple, private ceremony between the Church, God and I.

Now, there is much to be done - I hereby call all of the high-ranking nobles of the realm to a congress in the courtroom here at Varad, where we will decide policy for the coming campaign season.

He bows his head to Demeter.

I apologize good sir for interrupting your victory ceremony in this way. Well fought and bravo! Your valour will not be forgotten and it will be sung in legend forever that on the day of the accession of King Bokeny, one Demeter as Aba nembol did defeat all comers in the melee at the Junior King's tournament. All hail the Victor!

He waves his arms in the air, prompting a loud cheer from those gathered. Some peasant girls blush and throw roses at Demeter.

With the formalities thus concluded, the new King makes his way to Court.
