    Default the year in history

i had a crazy idea (yeah i could do it myself but i´m lazy and can´t get the hang of fraps to take screenshoots)

what about if we post a screen shoot everyday for every year in history from eb1 since i never seem to be able to pass from 220bc :\

and now comes the fun part where we bet wich will be finished earlyer our screenshoots of the year in history (272+14= 286 days) or eb2

at least we would have something new to read and debate everyday (we could even make one thread per day so everyone can opiniate on how things probably went spam spam spam spam spam spam spam is what we eat when we´re bored :\ )

Very interesting idea. So, lets start.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    From EB:

{YIH_272_BODY} Teleokles is Eponymous Archon of Athenai, in this 504th year after the first Olympiad, the first year of the 127th Olympiad. Lucius Papirius Cursor and Spurius Carvilius Maximus are both elected to serve their second terms as consuls at Roma, in this 482nd year ab urbe condita. The inundation of the Neilos marks the start of the inundation season in late October and is reckoned as the 14th year of the Pharaoh Ptolemaios II Philadelphos. This is the 26th year of the Pontic dynasteia, reckoned from its founding by Mithradates Ktistes.

\n\nPhylarchos' history begins with Pyrrhos' expedition in this year: Pyrrhos of Epeiros leaves others to continue his war in Makedonia and loads his army on ships, and with the permission of the Aitolians, sails around their lands and puts ashore on the Peloponnesos. By the end of the year, he will have proceeded to Megalopolis, then attacked Sparte itself after professing only good intentions. After being unable to take the polis, defended mostly by women and a small band of Spartans, instead of continuing his siege he goes north to face an approaching army of Antigonos' and while fighting with them at Argos, he is slain. Antigonos finds himself in a much relieved position with the Epeirotes pulling back from much of Makedonia. Kleon, the tyrant of Sikyon, is assassinated. A Carthaginian fleet sails to Taras, but leaves without initiating any hostilities.

\n\nPtolemaios II achieves several victories in southern Anatolia. But Galatian mercenaries hired by Mithridates and Ariobarzanes are able to defeat a Ptolemaic force in central Anatolia, and found the city of Ankyra after the battle. Late in the year Ptolemaios II wins back much of coastal Syria, leaving the situation in the region much in his favor and peace soon at hand.

\n\nLivius Andronicus comes to Rome. The Aqua Aniensis aqueduct is constructed under the supervision of the censor Curius Dentatus. Carvilius completes the final Roman victory over the Samnites and Papirius takes control of part of Bruttium and captures Taras itself. Triumphs take place in Rome celebrating Carvilius and Papirius over the Samnites, Lucanians, Bruttii, and Tarantines.

\n\nPerigenes of Alexandreia won the stadion at Olympia. Nikarchos of Elis won the wrestling competition, and Kratinos of Aigeira won the boy's wrestling compeition. Glaukon of Athenai won the tethrippon.

I think that in 272 BC the most important information is about Pyrrhos. I wonder why there is no movie about his live? He is among the most famous general ever with dramatic live and charisma. And we shouldn't forgot that in this year Glaukon of Athenai won the tethrippon!

The year in history stops somewhere after Cannae, just when it starts getting exciting everywhere!

Maybe something to pick up in the future, who made these anyway? Or did everyone fill in their part?

I know k_raso has done quite a bit of work compiling at least a large part of it. Not sure who started it. He did have help from various historians I think. Not sure.

i do wonder where is sykon (or is this another name for syracuse like depending on who´s talking about the carthaginians they can be called karchedoi poeni punic punii and so forth it seems like everyone had a diferent name for them)

also whats up with elis and they winning so many olimpic competitions ? i mean seriously i strongly suspect doping practices like they drinking birds blood or some other wierd cerimony

also spartans didn´t participate in competitions where they could have their head bashed in where they cowards or just soooooo vain that they where afraid someone could trash their face and women wouldn´t look at them anymore ?

also phyrrus expedition seems dumb i mean as the epirotes if you conquered sparta up to 270bc you should get kleomenes as a mercenary general like the karthies get xanthippos
he went to war with the makedonians because they didn´t sent him suport during the war with the romans so his solution is to loose even more men in a stupid war :\

also he should have consulted the oracle before going i mean he was unable to take a city with no walls and defended by youths and screaming crazy bitches (pardon my french) he didn´t took the hint that luck was not on his side then he looses his firstborn ptolomaiois kills the spartan dude who killed his son and continued instead of taking the hint and getting back home :\

phyrrus was undoutably a great military tactical genius but his views and knowledge of strategy was surelly lacking like it was proven when he "liberated" sicily without assuring their suport in the war against the romani in megales hellas he should have sticked with the war in makedonia kill the kelts who had looted aigai and declare himself soter of all the hellenes in the balkans surelly would have been a far better decision then going to the pelloponesos wich was a poor land who couldn´t yield him much profit and was hard to conquer by both the geography of the damm thing as well as their historically unrully populace (including the spartans)

if he had stayed in makedonia secure his position there and then reenforçed by the makedonians he could march south trough thessally and face off against antigonos from a far better position and be seen as a liberator instead of a halfwitt morron who couldn´t take a city defended by women and children while showing himself as just another conqueror barbaric alexandros wannabe

also even if he had conquered sparta what next ? kleomenes would be reinstated as king but then areus would return from krete and where would the surviving spartans stand ? taking sparta would have been a bigger burden then loosing it the way he did it since keeping kleomenes as king would mean he would leave a strong garrison to keep the helots in check and provide some protection against the ephorian knifes

A Carthaginian fleet sails to Taras, but leaves without initiating any hostilities.

sadly the kart hadasti respected the roman influence circle unlike the romans did with the karthies sphere of influence

the founding on ankyra (is it ankara the current capital of the turkomans ? )

as for the romans who was livius andronicus ? and dentatus seems to have been one of those nuovo uomini

Which Competitions? If you're referring to pankration, Spartan omoioi (equals) weren't allowed to participate cuz they had a considerable advantage over every other competitor. They were trained to kill with that discipline from a very early age. They wanted to compete, but nobody else wanted that.
