The question is, will those 1000 men behave like 1000 men or rather like normal 200 man units which have no idea what to do with the extra 800men standing behind them?

they actualy behave like there is more men in the unit all of them charge as well as fight

Love the idea but can't see it working in a siege battle - will one unit of ashigaru completely line the walls of a fort, another two fill it and the rest have to stand outside?

Have you ever tried putting them into line formations?

With that many people you can only do boxes. Formations that are a hundred people deep.. All this really achieves is longer lasting battles and more casualties from artillery.
