Entering the late game of a Hojo Legendary Domination Campaign.
I pretty much own the east half of the map and am pushing into the central bulge.
So far my armies have been made up almost entirely of yari, bow and matchlock ashigaru plus the odd bomb thrower unit (I had a samurai killer stack largely made up of units that defected to me when a Date general turned traitor but lost it in an autocalc battle).
While I love ashigaru I now want to add some elite units to my main stacks and thought I'd try out some monks (my main opponents are now the Christian Shoni and I am roleplaying Hojo as a honourable Buddhist clan so this will also be a crusade against the Nanban...)
Formerly I've always recruited these very late in the game from provinces like Aki and Yamato with all the ridiculous religious buildings and citadel bonuses to experience - (can you get +7?) but have been disappointed in their performance as their paper armour gets them slaughtered all too quickly (and its harder to micromanage them in legendary to keep them safe and use their special abilities).
However I have only just captured Ise and Yamato and it will take most of the remaining campaign to upgrade their infrastructure to produce max exp warrior monks (plus having played a campaign largely without trade and at constant war money is still short).
My main troop generating castles are now Echizen and Kaga both of which have armouries plus a master bowmaker and a master weaponsmith (experimented with master armourer but find that the melee attack bonus seems to work better than the max armour bonus as yari ashigaru tend to form my main fighting line until late campaign so they need to be able to kill as well as survive).
So if I build my bow and naginata monks there will the melee and missile bonuses from the bowmaker and weaponsmith compensate for them not getting those huge experience bonuses?
Or would I be safer sticking with bow and naginata samurai?
