Someone has sent me a thumbdrive that is detected as damaged by the system. I pried it open and noticed that the USB head was bent and partially detached, but had all the connections apparently intact. After "fixing" this and pondering ripping off the memory chip I noticed that one component, a square metallic piece appeared to be standing at an odd angle. I noticed that it detached from one of two solder points, hence why it was standing. I tried to gently force it back into place, but it popped off the other solder point. It fits snugly inside the 2 solder points, which form a slot. The device is still detected as damaged, so I probably did not destroy it yet.

Any ideas what that thing is? It is a 2 layered square with the top layer metal and the bottom layer apparently the same material as the circuit board. It is labelled "1200" and it has a sideways hourglass shape and the company's logo on it. I figured that the damaged solder points are the main cause, but there is literally almost no room to work, and the piece is fairly small.

Ideas on how to proceed?
