This kinda reminds of some of the Age of Empires II games I sometimes played, I'd spend a month on some and it would wind up a permament cold war between the Franks and Chinese.

I did play a game where I played as Portugal and left for a few islands, then left for America. After spending a bit of time conquering it. Came back to find Spain in control of most of it except for England and the Papacy. I suppose if I still had it, it could take a while trying to conquer all of Europe. Not sure about ten years though.

Ha, no way! I had the same thing, but it was between the Celts and the Teutons (me). Never was able to break their defenses and nor could they.

Empire certainly improved with patching, whether it got a lot better is another question.

I had a five hour 19 minute game with my brother once. That was a long game, but very fun. (I eventually won, but man it took a while).

You might enjoy a read of that. I certainly did. I love skpping turns till whatever number I feel like (generally 100+) and taking a weak kingdom and rebuilding them. It's good fun.

Naw I played a lot of AOE2 even did leagues and all that jazz. The nature of the Game because of its resource gathering aspect necessitates an end. Eventually the AI runs out of resources. However, the player makes sure to stock up on gold (the resource that matters). Also as a player we will set up trade routes as well and collect the relics. also on island maps the ai (this was a huge flaw which bothered me to no end) doesn't transport to colonize overseas so even more gold. Anyway it comes to a point where a best the AI is down to pikemen skirmishers and Hussites and no gold troops. So you waltz in with a gold heavy army with a few trebuchets and go about destroying it. It's the nature of the game the only difficulty is lasting that long.
