End of Day 5

The former Major was not a stranger to violence. He had been a fighter all his life, and to end his career he settled in the Vale as a captain of the local guard, the town of his first station. He was determined to catch the final killer and bring him to justice and set about to do so once again. As the group got ever higher and higher into the mountain, they began to notice things that weren’t quite right, bones that looked suspiciously like human ones, unnatural skulls and markings on the rocks. The air got thinner and thinner and they had to stop more often every time, letting the stench of death catch up with them again.

The Captain, the former Major started to scout ahead, with his dog Tennille an old hunting dog. He climbed further and further, each step increasing the dread he felt. Something was not right here. He paused for a while, and ate a small lunch. Meanwhile, the villagers were beginning to whisper about the Captain. Maybe he was scouting ahead to find traps to kill them all? Maybe he was trying to stop us? The whispers were initially met with derision by the Duke, but it was a recurring topic, and eventually the Duke began to wonder. Was it a setup?

The Captain walked onwards until he came to a passage that was so narrow only single file would fit. He ordered Tennille to stay, but the dog started to growl out him. His eyes narrowed but he began to walk through the passage. Voices began yelling out incoherently. His hand went to his sword as he went onwards. Suddenly, a figure appeared before him. One he hadn’t seen for a long time. His dead wife began to walk towards him. The Captain turned white and pulled his dagger out. “Who are you!” he whispered, as she came closer. His eyes fixed on hers as the dog yelped and barked at it. The figure smiled at the Major, perfectly white teeth, aligned correctly, eyes as blue as the ocean. “Won’t you join me, dear husband?” The Major began to fall under the spell. He began to put his dagger away. The figure smiled wider, impossibly wider at him. “Don’t you love me anymore?”

“I do…” he heard himself whisper, powerless to stop. Tennille ran at her master and began to bite and claw his hand. Colour returned to the Major’s face as pain flowed his senses. He screamed at the apparition as it began to grow claws and horns. He backed out of the chasm just before it finished changing.

“I’ll be seeing you again soon Major… don’t miss me!” the figure laughed and vanished.

The Major collapsed on the ground, as Tennille licked his hand. He had to warn the others. Forcing himself to get up he walked back down until he met the group. “Where’s the Duke?” he said to one of the guards.

“I’m sorry sir, I…”

“Goddamnit it man! Where is the Duke?”

“Here.” The Duke appeared along with the rest of the guard. “It’s time you faced justice Major.”

The Major went red with anger. “You fool! Do you think that killing me will stop the murderer you incompetent buffoon! The Mountain has driven you crazy, you’re killing off all the innocent people here. Step down now!”

The Duke wasn’t fazed. “Grab him. Kill him.” The Major drew his sword, but not quickly enough as the spear pierced his body. He coughed up blood as the spear was pulled out. He began to stagger around, Tennille barking and yelping trying to help the Major. He collapsed at the end of the camp, blood pouring out of the hole. Tennille licked his hand as he lay there dying.

“I told you that I’ll be seeing you again soon!”

“ you.”

The Major looked at Tennille one last time. “Help me. Don’t let her get me.” Then he closed his eyes for the final time.
