Thread: Fairness in the Olympics

Is it just me who thinks that nearly every decision made in the Olympics seems designed to favor the US's competitors? Why does the US even compete when everything is so slanted against them? Everything from revising rules to the judges selected to sabotaging players. (ie Nancy Kerrigan)
It is almost like Russia and China own the bloody Olympics. The US should boycott the olympics and leave the commies to play with themselves.

The Russians aren't commies anymore.

Examples or it didn't happen. Also I'm sure there are plenty of counter examples too.

Is whining an Anglo-Celtic thing (AU, UK & US) or do other countries make it a national sport too?

I'm lost. What about Nancy Kerrigan?

The world does not revolve around the USA

Neither are the Chinese really.

Vuk, do you any evidence for these accusations, or did you wake up today just knowing this to be true?

Appearently some dubious judgement in free skating 18 years ago.

She's most famous for that yeah, but that makes very little sense with Vuks original posting. Tonya was American and hardly a sign of corrupt judges.

Perhaps Tonya was a fifth-columnist commie under Nancys' bed or somesuch.

I would have said that half of the time it's yer own fault yer not winning more medals, last nights swim relay was probably lost due to the forced inclusion of Lochte.

No doubt sponsors and all sorts of finnacial rubbish were brought to bear to include him.

Am I the only one who is utterly unimpressed by the Olympics? I might watch 10 minutes on tv and be mildly entertained but who cares who wins anyway?

call me when they replace the Judo bore-a-thon by MMA matches or when they leak the sextapes of all those freaky nights in the Olympic village.

No. They're staying away in their thousands. Good.

People are not staying away, be there was an over allocation of tickets to the 'Olympic Family', ie freebies for sponsors, competitors, organisers etc.

I organise events for a living - no more than 1/3 of these sort of FTAs ever show up, unless there's free booze, but the sponsors always ask for huge numbers of passes.

I would be somewhat annoyed.

Talking about fairness and the Olympic games:

A teenager has been arrested by police investigating abuse of Team GB diver Tom Daley on Twitter.

So now "you disappointed your dead father" is a situation worthy of police intervention?

Thank God this didn´t happen in China.....it might be a free speech issue if it happened there.

In the UK we have done away with free speech, and instead have a system where one can be done for anything that may be perceived to upset someone. By logical extension there will be those who are offended by votes for women, so anything is game, provided the police / courts can be bothered.

The precident was set after one woman was harassed for over 2 years. The police did nothing as apparently there were too many people involved and too much evidence. The inference being there was too much effort for justice to be done - and besides, there would be no publicity. She fought on alone and got a court judgement in her favour.

A famous sportsman in the Olympics of course gets the full mailed fist of what is supposedly a free democracy on the writer of one comment.
The UK enjoys sneering at countries such as China or Russia even when undertaking acts that are similar in nature.

It's what we do. We take a dozen warships, sale up the Thames and destroy the Brits, and go back home for beers. But that is frowned upon these days so now we send our hockey team. Shouldn't have cheated us with with dressage that medal was supposed to be ours.

If someone said that to me, I'd probably end up getting charged for grievous bodily harm. What an absolute dick.

Absolutely he deserved a broken jaw. But why he was arrested is beyond my understanding

It's the 'offence' thing. I agree the guy was a cock but arrested by the coppers? People wonder why I hate politicians. Groodie-gullivers the lot of them.

I love how everybody suddenly becomes a huge fan of whatever their country gets a few Olympic medals at for a few weeks every four years.

I thought the US used a different way of counting medals from every other country so they're guaranteed to win. They count the total number of medals not the number of golds which trump the silver and bronzes like every other country.
