how to open preference.cfg file?? - in order to disable arrow markers

just installed the first time M2TW - and was looking for how to disable the green arrow markers and banners - ..i was searching here how to disable them and found information in the very detailed "M2TW FAQ and Strategy Tips" thread but i just cant open this medieval2.preference.cfg .?

played until now RTW or better the EB 1.2 Mod of it and changing such things or similar was quite easy - but here i have a file format i cant open.

..tried now with some free downloadable programm for opening cfg files - ..was happy that it could open it and found the line disable_arrow_markers = 0 - but just could not change anything! ..no delete, no typing, nothing.

i really dont want to play with those nasty green markers.

would be very pleased for help,

I backed up medieval2.preference.cfg and then renamed it to a .TXT file. Then I could edit it. Rename it back to CFG and you should be good to go.

I turn off the green arrows and the giant throbbing banners immediately before I play any TW game. I wish I could turn off the defense tower ownership bubbles in Fall of the Samurai. I can’t stand how they float over the castles looking stupid.

I’m surprised that more people don’t turn off the big banners but most people don’t. I’m sure glad they are optional!
