The truth is, no one really knows for certain: there are no descriptions, nor drawings...
By its name "pollice verso", is clear the thumb is "turned", in which direction, nobody knows :P
I thought it was up to die and sideways to live. That's what it was like on Courage.
It's so very tempting to link to the appropriate Order of the Stick comic, but I believe that's against our host's rules.
I think it was up to live, and sideways to die. It was sideways because then the emperors thumb was pointing towards the heart. They never did a thumbs down I believe. Some painter came up with that one and everyone liked the idea.
