    Default Generals

    Hi, i was wondering if anyone uses mercenary generals alot. For example, i like to build "assault armies" that have lots of heavy infantry, and maybe so light cavalry but not many missles of heavy cavalry, designed to take cities. Im particulary fond of using celtic lesser kings, as they are not super expensive, fairly good fighters, can gain traits that increase their exp faster than a regular unit would, and lastly can regenerate their numbers. On one hand though a mass of generals can sometimes move slwly since they all get movement traits etc. I was wondering if building lots of these generals could cause ctds, but mostly does anyone else use them in this fasion?

    In my KH campaign I like them for freshly conquered settlements. They are good cavalry unit that replenishes. And I don't worry if they die defending the settlement. Especially if its a losing battle.

    Yeah, that's why I use them too. In the beginning stages of my Romani campaign I have used them extensively, as they are a superb cavalry unit that replenishes, making the bodyguards invaluable for long campaigns in far-away lands. However, two months ago, I have switched to Client Ruler generals partially because of their lower cost and partially because of their Influence and governing abilities. BTW, the client generals, despite their 30% MP (movement point) penalty travel just as fast, and sometimes faster than regular cavalry. Also, client generals always seem to amass more bodyguards.

    Although most of my client ruler generals are pretty good, many with ten influence, my best non-FM general is a Mercenary Italic General who has 10 influence, 7 command, and 10 management. I have just recently adopted him and he already holds all of the offices (aedile, quaestor, praetor, tribune, etc) proceeding the consul's office. What's even more interesting is that he is a pessimistic plebeian, which gives him -5 influence.

    I do that too, but I am starting tomthink this is a bit ridiculous, it wasn't intended by design. Too easy to build an elite army early in the game.

    herm an army like that is probably 5 times more expensive then a regular army :\ you must be really swimming in money to be able to afford that

    Not really. Celtic general costs 400 or so per turn, while their elite heavy infantry is more than 600. Their regular medium spearmen are 400 or so.

    celt generals cost 500 per turn and the greek cavalry generals cost 1000 per turn so overall i think it will be the same price to maintain as an all elite hellenistic army. But if your playing as Rome with its cheap infantry then its probably cost 2-3 times more than an average army

    534 but that's still the same as the Neitos, their regular pendant, considering the repeleshment and the increaced morale... they actually seem less expensive O.O

    Most Generals however are just slightly better (one more attack maybe) (and offcource better morale) while costing the same or slightly more than the regular version(apart from the germanic, where the normal unit actually has slightly better stats). The great exception here is the Hellen, which is much more expensive than the Lonchophoroi, and to a smaller extent the eastern one where things are not quite as extreme.

    All this is based on the online EB unit list.

    PS: I think however Mercenary generals and Client rulers get salaries just like family members, which is calculated differently.

    PPS: @Empire what units are you reffering to? according to The online list Gailiche cost 300 and Arjos 520 (solduros 800 :O )

    I was talking about hellenistic elite armies. Elite phalanxes cost like 800 upkeep the very best cavalry cost 1000 upkeep but your likely to have 3 units of skirmishers and some light cavalry and flank troops or the army wont actually work. It will be roughly the same price as an army of Celtic lesser kings and hellenistic merc generals

    not really, you cant really afford it. Not even as Rome can you do that so early

    Actually, yes, you can. You don't need many of these units, just 2 or 3 early in the game make a huge difference, when all your other troops are low- level.

    Yes, they do. 200 mnai per turn, if I recall correctly. This is listed on the economy scroll under wages rather than upkeep.

    yeh but even thats gonna make most factions broke. Even if, say you get a hellenisitic mercenary general and 2 celtic lesser kings, thats 2000 spent on only 3 units. My entire starting Seleucid army cost about 3000 ( a third were archers and most were levies) for maintaince and i was making a scant 5k a turn
