I understand the sentiment, but I think the idea was that the embrionic stem cells had zero chance of developing further anyway, so it was beneficial to have them make a contribution towards curing debilitating diseases. Also, while it was predicted, there was no guarentee it could work. The medical industry wasn't going to stand still and wait for the outcome.
Either way, this is all-around good news. Those guys definitely deserve their Nobel prize.

Embryonic stem cells are in no way a person.
There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford
My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.
I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.
Indeedily-doo.
While I always applaud scientific progress, this discovery gets nothing more than the standard applause from me. And from the looks of it, I would've prefered the resources be spent on research relsted to the perfectly good pool of stem cells we already have.
Unless, of course, this method is cheaper. If so, scrap the babies!

They are spares from IVF, so absolutly nothing would and will change on that point. It's still good research.
Why do you get spares from IVF? That's because they fertilize a lot of eggs to find a few promising ones. Doing it one and one would be wasteful in time and reosurces and would give a lot more miscarriages from IVF, with the end result that fewer children will be born.
Less killling of embryos= less born children. That's a fact and a nice conundrum for you.
We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?
