Post Prisoner X or How Australia Fails it's Citizens

"It is now clear that at some point during his decade-long career spying for the Israeli secret service, Ben Zygier crossed a line.
But how a Melbourne man with dual Australian-Israeli citizenship went from espionage to being held in secret in a maximum-security prison near Tel Aviv where he ultimately met his death is only now being slowly unravelled.
Nor may the real circumstances of his death - described as asphyxiation or suicide by hanging in a ''suicide-proof'' cell under 24-hour video surveillance - ever be known."

"The government, Carr said, did not know that 34-year-old Melbourne man Ben Zygier had been imprisoned by Israeli authorities until after he had died and his family had asked for his body to be repatriated. The interview was packaged into Foreign Correspondent's explosive report claiming Zygier was the notorious ''Prisoner X'', a mystery inmate held in solitary confinement at Israel's maximum-security Ayalon Prison."

"On Wednesday afternoon, Carr's office began calling journalists to retract the statement. And on Thursday morning, Carr admitted to a Senate estimates hearing that some officials in his department had learnt from the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation on February 24, 2010, that Zygier had been jailed because of ''serious offences under Israeli national security legislation'' - nearly 10 months before he died."

Speculation was that Mr X was going to inform Australia on Israel using Australian passports for Mossad spying and assassinations.

The Australian government was complicit in the cover up and only changed their tune when several media outlets revealed key sources of information that contradicted the Australian governments official lines.

I'd love to see a full wikileaks of this...

It happened with Hicks in Gitmo, he had to get British citizenship to get out of that hell-hole. Wouldn't trust our Government to do anything for a goldfish in slightly acidic water, let alone a human being.
