You're welcome! I learned how to do that to help the game out lol. There seem to be a lot of problems with the game, passing on traits and stuff. That or I'm too particular.
Glad it helped. :D

give_trait this <trait> and give_ancillary this <ancillary> is your friend if you like to cheat :) If you play vanilla M2TW I certainly understand why you need to "fix" your generals, but there are many mods out there where the bugs have been fixed. The mutually exclusive Battle Chivalry and Battle Fear traits you mentioned are a great example.
An early version of Blood, Broads and Bastards is probably your best choice IMO
Also, you might need to check the names file to make sure that you are addressing the right character if you're not using "this" or if he is in settlement.

A little light cheating hasn't hurt anyone. xD
The game's kinda broke in some ways too. You can have an intelligent princess and a smart general marry and lo and behold, none of the kids inherit the intelligence. x_x Which I guess is... okay. Interestingly, the handsome trait is really easy to pass on. (As are ugly, insane, and infertile.)
I use a few mods though. Some help out quite a bit. Blood, Broads, and Bastards is especially good for addressing these issues. :D
