Thread: Recruitment question

  1. #1

    Default Recruitment question

I'm playing Pontus and I've conquered a couple Homeland provinces.
I've built the Level 1 government building, but I can't recruit soldiers out of the factional barracks.
I can recruit the local "foreign" troops out the other barracks, though.

What's the trigger for being able to recruit out of the factional barracks?
Hold the city for a certain number of turns?
    Upgrade the barracks building?
    Upgrade the city?

I've searched the forum and the faq, but my google-fu is not strong today.

    Thanks in advance!

The first factional troops you can recruit are the eastern skirmisher ones, which are not available is some of Pontos' home provinces if i remember correctly.
Try upgrading the barracks a bit, if you still can't recruit any from it then something is wrong.
Besides, for Pontos homeland provinces are not that good anyways.

You can use the recruitment viewer to see what is available in your provinces.

Also; if you capture Sardis and Ipsos you should build Type III governments there, despite the fact that Type II is also available there. With the Type III, you can build up the regional barracks high enough to build Kleruchoi phalangites and Lonchophoroi Hippeis, both of which are very useful for Pontos.
The same applies to several other regions with good regional units.

    Thanks for the responses. :)
I'll try upgrading the barracks, and I'll check out the recruitment viewer.

I can recruit in my capital so I know the barracks works in at least one city.

And alas, I've already put different governments in Sardis and Ipsos.
I may have to change that tonight.

You can also use the process_cq cheat to finish the buildings in the building que. Just use it to view what will become available and after that reload an earlier save.

About Ipsos, you should have that be a lvl 3 (lvl 2 might do, don't know exactly).
That way you can get some medium phalangites, since you can only recruit native and bronze shields otherwise.

Prontos does not get any new units via reforms, only the Hellenic Bodyguards that come with the March of time event. As the others already said the Pontos first few regions don't have that many low level Factional troops. Check the RV and upgrade your barracks.

EB rosters are not quite as linear as RTWs^^

    Does Pontos have custom reforms?
I only thought they had the march of time thing, you are not confusing Pontos with Hayasdan?

oh, yeah I confused the two, you are correct. The aforementioned reforms are indeed for the Hai. There are no seperate reforms for Pontos^^

You were right in your first post. There is a late bodyguard for Pontus (Pontikoi Strategoi) and it looks really nice.

Re Pontus units: there are also:
    - Galatian Heavy Spearmen in Ancyra and Amaseia
    - Celto-Hellenic infantry in a few places with celtic influence
    - Horse archers and riders in the east

The march of time reform was never in question, but that he mistook the custom (not linked to march of time) reform for Hai belonging to Pontos.

Also a bit of topic, but is there any difference between gymnasium and house of strength?
Pontos has access to both and is there any reason to build a specific one of them over the other?
    They seem identical.

That was not clear to me. Sorry for jumping in then.

If I recall correctly then the two buildings have the same benefit i.e. +1 exp, however, the conditions for the building is different. In some areas you can build both, in settlements with mostly Hellenic influence you can only build the Gymnasium and in the East you can build the House of Strenght.
