That you couldn't use them in the centre of the line doesn't mean they're useless. The phalanx still needs solid heavy infantry to guard its flanks, and hoplites could have performed that job the same as hypaspistai.What I meant is that hoplites are no match for Macedonian phalangites in the open field. It would be a waste to confine the sarissa-bearers to cities, considering how essential they were to the Alexander's strategy. That doesn't mean that hypaspists couldn't be used to guard the flanks so that the main part of the army (sarissa-bearers) could keep pushing forward, though.
