Post Lime Green Energy - Nuclear or Fossil?

    http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-23236532

Coal reduces lifespan in North China by an average of 5.5 years.

    http://m.theage.com.au/comment/japan...604-2nomz.html

    Fukushima no immediate deaths.
'Now the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation has drawn on 80 scientists from 18 countries to produce a draft report that concludes: "Radiation exposure following the nuclear accident at Fukushima-Daiichi did not cause any immediate health effects. It is unlikely to be able to attribute any health effects in the future among the general public and the vast majority of workers."'

So a casual policy of giving 500 million people free coal to heat their homes has resulted in an average of five and a half years loss of life expectancy.

An old nuclear power plant is hit with a massive earthquake then a tsunami and the outcome is not a single case of radiation sickness. Long term infants in localized hot spots are looking at a 6-7% increased chance in getting cancer over their lifetime.

So why not support nuclear power?

Its certainly safer then coal, fertilizer or oil.
Our genes maybe in the basement but it does not stop us chosing our point of view from the top.

I think there is a very simple term for what I am trying to explain, I just have no idea what it is in English.

But generally speaking, the potential for disaster might outweigh the benefits.

    Mathematically speaking:

Option A) 99% chance of success, 1% chance a shitload of people will die. Very cost efficient.

Option B) 100% chance of success, 0% chance a shitload of people will die. Not at all efficient.

What option you opt for basically show where you lean when it comes to capitalism / socialism.

    Ain't nothin' free.
From memory 15 dead, 50 missing; centre of town a crater.
From transportation of oil...not exactly considered high-risk.

Nuclear looking better all the time :) Now what were we going to do with the waste?

Aren't we sending it to Africa already?

EDIT: Clearly because they have the skill and expertise to handle it in a safe manner.

I am a big fan of ITER and Fusion power. Though there are quite a lot of promising alternatives.

I think everyone having mandatory solarpanel systems would end up reducing a lot of the cost. Depending on who lives in the buildings and locations, they can be self-efficient and excess can be 'sold' to energy companies.

You can even be stupid and understand that humanity basically have 2 options:

    1. Die.
    2. Find a renewable source of energy.

I hope I don't have to defend this position as I quite frankly deem it as a "doh!"

    1. Yes (in some areas)
    2. Yes, we do. There are entire reactors designed to reuse spent nuclear fuel and turn it into isotopes that decay on a different time span than current nuclear fuel.

Fusion is known for always being 25 years away. It's problematic to try and recreate the process on the sun by using a large magnetic field and an enclosed volume to simulate what gravity does for the stars.

Solar panels like with a lot of renewable energy sources are dependent on rare earth elements that are almost entirely mined by China (seriously, like over 90% of the total supply for them is from China). If you want the Western world to feel nice and green, you are gonna have to ignore the barren craters that the unregulated Chinese mining will create all over their pristine wilderness.

This is the dumbest thing I've seen on The Org, you should feel bad for posting it.

    How so?

I admit that I have very VERY little knowledge on energy sources...

But my statement in general I don't see as very faulty?
