BR book club?

I had an idea some days ago...

How about a Backroom book club?

Say, one book a month... members can suggest books and we vote once a month for what books to read next (preferably some months in advance, so international members have time to order the books that often likely only are in English).

Forum would be closed for members (but open for view?), but joining wouldnt require more than "can I join". Maybe closed for view too, so we can skip the PG13?

I don't have an exact plan, just want to put the idea out there...

Thoughts/ideas?

EDIT: Political books of course.. Doesnt have to be HARDCORE ones though, I for one count "starship troopers" as a political book... But I don't feel like discussing Twillight, HoreTore, I am looking at you here.

I think the forum, with time, have matured TBH... Many who joined in their teens are now 20+, many who joined 20+ are now 30+....

Looking around here now, I think the "climate" is more ready for a book club. I sure as hell wouldn't have joined one 5-10 years ago.

The book selected for the last Org Book Club was hellishly hard to find. Out of print, like. So everyone laid hands on a copy at different times, and no discussion really happened.

Pro tip: Do not select an out of print book for the club.

DOH! It's not about "pick a book no one will understand", it's about "people who have no problem reading a book a month, join up in a discussion about it with Backroom standards".

Less tip, more join.

The meaning of the club wouldn't be about intellectual supremacism - it's about picking a book like Animal Farm, The God Delusion, Shantaram or whatever and having a secure space where you can went it with fellow actual people using their brain.

All under Backroom standards.

Oh, and it's my sister who is the language teacher with Twilight on her curriculum... I get the kids to read Das Kapital and Wealth of Nations.

A fundamental part of a Vikings education is to learn where the good places to loot and rape are. Thus, Wealth of Nations and Babes of Nations are extremely important books.

I like the idea but previous efforts never really took off. Going for a casual read, The Hunger Games is really fun, the type of book you bring to the beach. Just stupidly entertaining. For something with more depth, I really liked Lord of the Flies. It's kinda funny, I once had it for a school asignment. I must have made my English teacher really say because I marked everything that wasn't important at all, I never understood the book at the time. Rereading it was kinda a shamefull excersise.

As long as you keep in mind that it's a kid's book it's great fun. Movie is much better actually imho.

Now for something completily different, I keep recommending it but people don't listen, House of Leaves. I can absolutily assure you you have never read anything like it. It's a descent into total madness. It uses typography in a way you have never seen. It's an interactive novel really. It's scary, confusing, and pretty damn brilliant.

It used to be pretty expensive but that isn't a problem anymore. Cult-classic.
