Sounds like he having trouble forgiving himself. There's nothing wrong with having regrets; if I for instance were to list all the things I wish I had not done, it would be a very long post. Life goes on though, and sometimes there's literally not a damn thing you can do about righting the wrong. In that situation all you can do is acknowledge that you were wrong, forgive yourself for it, promise yourself not to repeat the mistake, then move on. The ability to forgive yourself imho is absolutely crucial, as it also allows you to forgive others.
