A certain class of Dark Age Irish warriors wear trews, some to below the knee and some ankle length with a strap under the instep. I have found three illuminations in The Book of Kells of men wearing trews:
An Irish warrior in trews in The Book of Kells, c.800AD
An Irish soldier with spear and small round shield wearing a cloak and trews in The Book of Kells.
A man wearing a round-necked jacket with fitted sleeves and ankle-length trews held taut with instep straps.
Are there any more or bigger/better images of trew wearing Irish in The Book of Kells?
