Cannot start game

Hello everybody, I am unfortunately having trouble getting the game to start. I have Medieval Total War 2 Gold installed - all four Kingdoms as well as main game. I have tried installing them both inside and outside Program Files, I have copied in the text file from the "Problems getting the mod installed or running" thread, I have changed that script the thread also recommends to lead to where I have java installed. All in vain.

If I try to run the game through Steam, I get the "shared.txt:{GERR_GENERIC}" message - but since I bought the game on CD I suppose that's the link that ought to work (forgive me for trying both, but I've been trying everything). When I click the CD version link, two boxes open, one a black MS-DOS looking one, and a fault one called "Windows Script Host" and lists the address of the build-strings-bin.wsf file - then it says "Line: 0, Sign: 1, Fault: : JScript, Code: 8007007E, Source: Windows Scripts Host"
(I translated the categories Line, Sign, Fault etc. from Danish, so they may be called something else on an English computer). Closing latter box ends the attempt at starting the game and I'm left on the desktop.

Interestingly, the latter box also appears if I try to follow the "Problems"-thread's advice and "run" the build-strings-bin.wsf file - never having opened it succesfully, I dunno what its actually supposed to do, but the thread says it should run for some seconds, whatever that means. I however, just get the aforementioned box.

I know there is already a thread by Moriluk in here, who also seems to have difficulty starting the game - I am however less competent at computers than he so I basically don't understand much of that thread - does anyone have a solution for me - I would be most happy if they did :) Best wishes

Sorry about all these problems starting the game. We hope that the next release will work without jumping through any hoops.

There is no need to apologize, you've all done the best you can to make a great game and I don't even have to pay for it. As a matter of fact, I never got the 2.0 to work, but 2.01 works, so now Im playing the game :)
