I'm sort of interested in that special edition that they're offering, it looks quite cool in my book. Sure, it's not M2TW Collectors', but the box has some very cool artwork and the extras make up for it if I decided to pre-order Attila.

Seems like pre-order cost will be $45. Its available now on the Sega store but not on Steam yet.

Also the release date is the 17th of February and not the September of 2015, as some Texans used to say...

I sincerely hope they are not rushing out the game again, February seems pretty early, considering it was just announced two months ago.

If one considers the follow up expansions to each the two previous main games starting with Empire when they introduced the Warscape game engine and went to Steam authentication exclusive, those expansions have been relatively trouble free. Napoleon had little if any of the technical issues of Empire and FOTS was a perfect addition to Shogun 2 IMHO,

Each of those expansions were released within 13 months of the main game. Attila on the other hand will come out just shy of 18 months after Rome 2. Knowing that Rome 2 had massive gameplay issues to fix first probably explains this delay because from past developer
comments, we know that they are always working on two releases in advance.

The developers also had the advantage of seeing and hearing all the negative feedback from the changes they made in Rome 2 that were universally rejected by players. It's also obvious from the half baked political system and incompetent siege A.I. at release that the game was pushed out the door too soon.

It's not perfect even now, but most things have been fixed well enough that I've been able to have some fun with it.

As to Attila, I could be wrong, but I just don't think they are going to screw it up two releases in a row. Of course time will tell.

    Cheers

It's going to be a retextured Rome 2, so the game has really been out for quite a while yet.

I gotta say, I consider 45 bucks a joke. I wasn't considering buying this at launch after R2 debacle anyway, but even if I had been this price would have been sufficient reason not to all by itself. Fortunately this being SP, I need only sit back and wait while they patch it up and eventually it'll be 20 bucks, which is what it's really worth to me.

$45 does seem a bit overpriced. Thankfully the 25% off discount is on GMG so that knocks the price down to about $33, which I think is much more reasonable a price.

Yepper, 33 is getting down where I could see people pulling the trigger on it. I'm still going to hold off, wait for the reviews, let them do a bit of patching. I'm hoping they have taken the criticism of Rome 2 launch to heart, but then I'm also skeptical they have given the recent clamp down at the main TW forum.

Patience is well served though given it usually leads to lower prices and an improved product.

Though to be honest I wasnt too disappointed with Rome 2, Ive only crashed twice in the game for non-mod reasons and I didnt really experience most of the bugs everyone was reporting. Maybe I just got lucky.

It was the same for me actually. Except for an early lighting bug that was cleared by the 3rd patch, the vanilla game has run absurdly well on my mediocre system. So from that perspective I also have no complaints.

Glad Im not the only one then. My disappointment really just comes from certain features, most of which are corrected with mods anyways.

Default Pre-order Bribe and Fluffy/Expensive edition announced.

So they posted the rosters so the Viking forefather factions and I got to say, I am rather pleased. I'll post them when I get home, but each of the three factions have a baseline of a good number of units plus a few extra for each faction that's supposed to differentiate from each other. Like the Geats have special spear units, the Jutes have special axe men, and the Danes have special marines or something. Ill have to double check but I'm looking forward to it!

So here is the complete roster and faction traits, courtesy of the steam page for the DLC:
    Unique Cultural traits
All Norse factions share the Viking Raiders trait, making them expert profiteers from raiding, looting and sacking.

    Unique Faction Traits
All Norse factions bear a unique trait which further defines their strengths and play-style in the Grand Campaign.

    The Danes: Seaborn
Immune to both high-seas attrition and seasickness, The Danes are able to weather the worst maritime conditions and make full use of their land units in naval conflict.

    The Geats: Cold Blood
The hardy Geats are raised in icy climates. As such they benefit from a morale-boost when fighting in winter and are immune to snow attrition.

    The Jutes: Despoilers
The Jutes are the ultimate profiteers in war, and gain significant income from razing settlements and destroying units in battle.

    Unique mission objectives
Players using Norse factions will receive a unique series of mission objectives over the course of the campaign.

    Unique units
Each of the three Norse factions can recruit two unique units in battle:

    Geats
    Thrall Spears
Plentiful and Inexpensive, Thrall Spears can form a defensive backbone for any army.

    Thrall Spearmen
Thrall Spearmen represent a solid anvil for the enemy to spend his cavalry against, and can pack a deadly punch on the charge with their javelins.

    Jutes
    Huscarls
The fearless Huscarls hurl themselves into battle, carving a gory path through the enemy ranks with their axes.

    Royal Huscarls
Disciplined, highly trained and more heavily armoured than other axe units, the Royal Huscarls strike fear – and sharpened steel – into the hearts of their foes.

    Danes
The seagoing Danes may recruit the fearsome Drekkar Dragonship manned with two extra varieties of troop options. These rugged warships can withstand much punishment before delivering some of the Viking Forefathers’ most powerful and vicious melee warriors – the Chosen Norse Marauders and the Elite Norse Marauders - into the fray.

    Viking Forefathers unit rosters
Alongside elements from the Barbarian battlefield unit roster, The Geats, the Jutes and the Danes can field specific Norse units in battle on land and sea.

    Spear infantry:
    Thrall Spears (Geats only)
    Thrall Spearmen (Geats only)
    Nordic Levy
    Nordic Spearmen
    Elite Nordic Spearmen
    Nordic Spearmasters

    Pike infantry:
    Nordic Pikemen

    Melee infantry:
    Nordic Band
    Nordic Brigade
    Wold Coats
    Hirdmen
    Nordic Warriors
    Elite Nordic Warriors
    Chosen Warriors

    Axe infantry:
    Nordic Axe Warband
    Huscarls (Jutes only)
    Nordic Axe Warriors
    Royal Huscarls (Jutes only)
    Viking Raiders
    Norse Berserkers

    Bow infantry:
    Nordic Bows

    Slingers:
    Nordic Hurlers

    Skrimishers:
    Thrall Skirmishers
    Nordic Skrimishers
    Nordic Javelinmen
    Nordic Brigands

    Melee Cavalry:
    Nordic Mounted Raiders
    Nordic Horse Raiders
    Nordic Horse Lords
    Viking Raider Cavalry

    Skirmisher Cavalry:
    Nordic Raiders

    Artillery:
    Onager
    Large Onager

    Warhounds:
    Warhounds

    Naval units
    Unique General unit: Viking Captain

    Ramming ships:
    Strike Liburnian (Nordic Light Bowmen)
    Assault Liburnian (Nordic Light Bowmen)

    Melee ships:
    Snekkja Longship (Nordic Heavy Marauders)

    Assault ships:
Drekkar Dragonship (Elite Norse Marauders – Danes only)
    Drekkar Dragonship (Nordic Berserker Marauders)
Drekkar Dragonship (Chosen Norse Marauders – Danes only)

    Bow Ships:
    Skeid longship (Norse Bow Marauders)

    Artillery ships:
    Artillery Liburnian

    Fireships:
    Greek Fire Dromonarion
Now I dont know about you but this seems like a rather fleshed out roster, especially since its for DLC factions.

That Danish Seaborn trait kinda jumps out at me a bit. "Immune to seasickness" and "able to weather the worst maritime conditions". Such a description would be meaningless (I think) in R2; implies that they're adding some sort of at-sea weather variation beyond mere seasons & deep ocean.

I also wonder exactly what "make full use of their land units in naval conflict" means, since that obviously indicates that other factions aren't able to do so.

I agree that's a pretty decent unit roster. Even pikemen, apparently, which seems odd for Scandinavian factions. Will be interested to see the stats on the Nordic Bows (I like using archers).

I think what they mean by "make full use" is that the other factions get a penalty while fighting at sea because of sea sickness, but none of the Danish units get sea sick.

The Dane Marauder units are also interesting...I don't recall seeing a faction have a naval-only troop type before.

The drawback is that I doubt very much CA is going to do a substantial overhaul of naval close-quarters combat, which devolves into a big gaggle of almost uncontrollable ships. Which means the Marauders may not be all that compelling to actually play on the battlefield.

On the other hand, should provide Danish fleets a very powerful organic amphibious and coastal-settlement defense capability, without having to lug troop transports around with them.

I hope, I just hope that pre-ordering was a good decision. Rome 2 was horrifyingly unstable.
