The only place I have ever been assaulted was in Glasgow. Returning from a night out and in the company of my navy squad buddy and some local lassies, a group of adolescent wannabe thugs (about 6-7, though when I tell the story - it was at least a dozen) got their asses handed to them.

The problem with local thugs is reprisals. If you beat them up, they might torch your car or vandalize other assets you own.
While visiting a lassie in South Nitshill ('93), I saw a guy chase some youngsters away from his car with a hammer (they had been deflating his tires as a prank), the next time I visited, there was a burned out car in that exact spot.
Though very satisfying to let loose the natural man, there is wisdom in taking the high road.

It is a comfort to know that you've been assaulted by your compatriots. Makes your wounds and your soul heal quicker.

Retribution? For what, calling him a name? Extremely brutish and petty.

For another assault a year ago by entirely different individuals with perceived group affiliation? Downright primitive.

No, much better to think of it as self-defense.

I wouldn't read to much into "retribution", if I know PVC right. He meant that from a psychological perspective, I believe... I had been damaged by immigrant gangs, I walked out of the next situation having damaged them. So retribution....

I don't think he in any way would be positive towards the idea of me beating up some random blokes for looking black.

I only hit the guy when he went to shove though, mind you. Sticks and stones... Fortunately I had some kind of reflex that made the "move away from the shove" the same action as hitting the guy. Then sure I did it some more, but they were like 5 so I had to make sure I got my attacker down before they could react.

Still was the dog who probably saved me though, not some amazing ninja skillz of mine...

But yes, as you say, it's self defense and anything else would be horrible. I am rather sure PVC meant just that though, it just came out wrong.

I always take my loss, I don't have to, I hae a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and am a pretty nasty kickboxer, could hurt. Won't. I hate agression.

I don't mean in the sense of "HA EVIL BROWN MAN, SEE HOW I SMASH YOUR TEETH".

What I meant was, "If you attack someone then you deserve to get punched and if you end up spitting teeth it's no one's fault but your own." So literal retribution - he assaulted you, from behind, and you hit him in response.

Which is the same as self defence, the nuance is that self defence implies (in England at least) that you should feel bad.
