A remastered version would be the most moddable TW game and the only TW game that wouldn't crash.

Judging by the fact that we're going forward with Pharaoh TW, a remastered STW is probably not going to happen. It's been 22 years since then. RTW was far more popular, and it was 3D, making it easier to remaster.

Maybe the original MTW1 has better chances to be remastered at some point? It's more popular and it sold more than STW, at least. What do you think the odds are be in comparison to STW? Are the odds really the same as STW or maybe a little higher?

Remarkably, there's about 80 - 120 players playing S:TW each month on Steam. Even after 22 years :)

February 1999 article, highlighting that Shogun was under development. Essentially announcing the game. 25 years ago.

Shogun TW would launch a year later, in June 2000.

Hi, edyz. With all my respect.. I disagree with your assertions, here's why:

    1) The age of the game doesn't preclude a remaster.. There are hips of +20 year old games that got this kind of treatment recently: Tomb Raider 1,2 and 3, Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, Stronghold, Star wars Dark Forces, Baldur's Gate, Neighbors from Hell,System Shock, Final Fantasy 1-6, Final Fantasy 7, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro.. Even the 27 years old Argonaut's Croc Legend of the Gobbos is getting an HD remaster. Why would then STW and MTW not be getting the same treatment? There is no point in what you've said. Also, not all of those are more popular than STW and MTW, some are less and still got a remaster so the level of popularity is not an issue since STW and MTW are too iconic and important to be left in the dust.

    2) The fact that they are going forward with WH3 and Pharaoh doesn't mean anything. They can produce new games while still paying Feral Interactive (the studio that made Rome Remaster and mobile and Med2 mobile) to make a low cost remaster of STW, MTW and MTW2. Remasters don't preclude the production of newer sequels, and Feral is responsable for remasters and ports, not CA itself. So even this argument is flawed.

    3) RTW is 3D, but the fact that STW and MTW are 2D is actually a plus because it is easier and cheaper to update 2D games than 3D games. Risks are lower and costs are less than a half of what it costed to them to make RR. Tons of 2D games are getting remastered... Being 2D doesn't preclude a refresh at all, quite on the contrary. See Stronghold, Command and Conquer and AoE remasters and you'll get what I mean.

    4) Remasters are an easy cashgrab and CA loves money, thus a remaster of MTW and STW would generate enough money to make them satisfied... Also, both games are struggling with compatibility issues so remasters will be more needed more and more as time passes. The demand for them is slowly increasing. Also, remasters are becoming a trend in the gaming industry nowadays, which reinforce my hypothesis further. Easy money made on nostalgia.

    5) I've found a leak by Volound on Reddit that points towards these remasters being a likely outcome for the future. I can send it to you, if you wish?

That being said, I hope I was clear with my counter-arguments.

Here's the leak I've mentioned above, read it: https://www.reddit.com/r/Volound/com...me_remastered/

Best regards! Let me know your thoughts.

This is a discussion to be had, clearly, and it's one that concerns a lot of existing Total War historical players who do not play the Warhammer saga. Pharaoh TW is not a fully fledged historical game, it's a Saga title, akin to Thronnes of Britannia.

That being said, the issues in CA recently (past 6 months) have caused some significant changes to the roadmap I presume. I stick to my initial assertion, we will not get a Shogun or a Medieval 1 remaster, at least any time soon. Remastering RTW was easier to do because of 3D gameplay, remastering MTW / STW is a 2D game and that will have it's own set of challenges. STW is 25 years old, MTW is 22 years old. It used to be easier to update 2D games, not any more, because 2D games are not that common any more and you are working with legacy software.

I was thinking earlier of Shogun 1, and reminded that the Warlord Edition exists. I'm tempted to add it to my (almost complete) physical collection of all historical Total War games, with their Collector's Edition as well.

Did the Warlord Edition add anything apart from the Mongol Invasion expansion pack?

Also, I found a mint / near perfect condition Warlord Edition PC box & game on eBay. Quite tempting.

My memory is quite foggy, but I do remember Warlord edition changed a lot of things in terms of unit balance. I preferred it and it was necessary to play online multiplayer (it was what everyone else was using at the time, and the balance was arguably better). If my memory serves, the original version could result in gigantic stacks of armies and battles sometimes took ages to conclude in single-player. I'd have to dig up the old threads--there was A LOT of debate about it back in the day. That being said, the vast majority of players were using Warlord Edition at the end of the original Shogun's glory days.

So it did have changes, interesting. I just purchased the Mongol Invasion expansion pack and never played the Warlord Edition. You learn new things every day, thank you Togakure.

I'm off to search for a pristine mint condition Warlord Edition.

I got Shogun TW for Xmas back in 2000. For the 25th anniversary of Shogun Total War, in 2025, I will be getting the Warlord Edition.
