Well just turn on autosave. It saves after everyturn, so even when the game crashes you don't lose much.

I was having the same problem until I read a post in The Apothecary.
When you save a game you have to make sure that there are NO units being built in ANY quay in ANY of your provinces.
Clear the quays first and then save the game. Buildings under construction are OK-just units.
Don't know if this will help in your current game though as there were probably units quayed up already in your last save. Try clearing them and then saving again.
