The Illyrians, much like other barbarian, tribal factions in RoP, represent a confederation of related tribes. They start the scenario with a single province in the extreme north-western corner of the map. This province is blessed with deposits of copper, enabling superior weapons to be manufactured in time.
Illyria has three other provinces bordering it: Dacia to the north-east, Thrace to the east and Macedonia to the south. Whilst Dacia is in rebel hands, it is well defended and you can be sure that both the Scythians and the Thracians will be keen to incorporate it into their own territory. With the fearsome Dacian Romfeofori available to recruit there it is a province that a wise Illyrian king would want under his control rather than his enemies'. Dacia's extensive resources of iron mean that this province can produce the very finest weapons to be found anywhere west of the hellespont!
In this era, the Illyrian's southern neighbours - the Macedonians - are still relatively undeveloped, and depend largely on tribal troops levied from the client tribes of the Macedonian king. However, they do aspire to greater things and the Greek influence is clearly seen in their military thinking. Leave them to develop for too long and the Illyrians will not be able to withstand their onslaught.
On the other hand, the Thracians have already developed a formidable force of cavalry and have other troops which will prove challenging for the Illyrians in battle.
The challenge is how to expand Illyrian influence without leaving a flank exposed for a powerful enemy to exploit.....
