What we're speaking of is being assigned a role prior to expressing commitment to, or even interest in, the game.

You still signed up before the deadline - it's not like you were in the in-between period after closing of signups yet before game start.

When I'm hosting I *never* rand roles while signups are still ongoing. It's a really, really big leap of faith to assume that this is the case here, which you seem to be implying.

I was responding around my being, according to Choxorn, Mafia "all along", "sneaking in at the last minute to try to avoid notice". My response was set against there being like an hour between my joining and the full set of roles being sent out.

Not being surprised at being randed town in a 2/12 game has nothing to do with signing up at the last minute. I don't think a GM would accept anyone after he already sent out roles, and if he had not sent out roles yet, he'd just re-rand with a new player.
