Clearly, they're not unbeatable. Bring as many troops from Kyoto close to you without compromising the public security of Kyoto and make sure you bring in more reinforcements if possible.

Draw the Takeda into a forest or some sort of easily defensible area and simply defend your lines.

To add to edyz advise, bring a good bit of yari samurai too. They will handle the cavalry.

Indeed. As Gregoshi said, yari samurai are quite useful is more or less every encounter. Add some naginata with them or some swordsmen and you're good to go. Just keep your archers safe, make sure they do damage and you should be able to work it out.

Just to emphasize edyz's point, your salvation does not lie with the army in the castle. I think it will get chewed up pretty bad by Takeda Shingen (of all people!). A properly composed relief army and the right terrain is your best hope.

Thank you for all of your replies ! The only army I have in Kyoto is my next daimjo and his 6 or 7 archers, and I don't have any yari samurai

Archers are really useful, so use them.

Horrible, entire army of mine was crushed, and my clan Chosokabe didn't have any more income so I bancroted :( Starting a new campaign as Shimazu and it is X times better (:

That is a bummer, but I'm sure you learned some lessons with that defeat. Good luck with Shimazu. They start from a very good position compared to many of the other clans.

Speaking of campaigns... the Uesugi have an excellent position, easy to trade with, access to resources, relatively protected by the mountains and rivers. Give them a go.

One thing to remember: much of the game is preparing for the inevitable Realm Divide.
    Good luck with Shimazu

A little tip - capture the European warship. It makes naval battles, especially when it comes to trade routes, so much easier.
