... and two for the price of one. Ana Brnabic has became the first female and the first openly gay PM in the history of Serbia (possibly the entire region).

Interestingly enough, it wasn't really about political correctness. She was the best candidate, imho.

What does this mean for the bigger picture? Well, she was educated in US and UK. During her time in UK, she was a member of "Srpski informativni centar", literally Serbian Centre for Information, which was a non profit conservative organisation of Serbs mostly in UK, Canada and US, where she worked from 1998-2002. The organisation itself was anti Milosevic so they were supported by various western governments. She worked as a mediator between anti Milosevic political organizations in Serbia and media in UK. Almost immediately after that she is employed by USAID to supervise various projects in Serbia. In 2011, she was hired by another US company, Continental Wind, and in 2013 promoted to general manager of their branch in Serbia. In 2016 she becomes a minister of Public Administration (Serbian Jim Hacker), where she made some significant improvements in just one year.

In domestic terms, Aleksandar Vucic (former PM, now president) is still alpha and omega in Serbia. She isn't a member of any party but she is dependent on his party support for her government. It is a paradox of sorts, since PM in Serbia holds basically all the power. President, aside from being a commander-in-chief and having some influence in conducting foreign policy, doesn't decide anything.

In terms of foreign policy, she was definitely a favourite of the West, and I wouldn't be surprised if Vucic was encouraged by the Western diplomats to name her as the new PM. I don't expect much to change in the near future. Serbia will try to maintain friendly relations with Russia, but this appointment definitely sends a signal about priorities in foreign relations. In recent times, quite a few western political journalists from Politico, Economist and others wrote about expanding Russian influence in Serbia and western Balkan in general.

So, there you have it. A nice little report so you know what's going on in this part of the world.

Ι can't believe it, betrayed by our Orthodox brothers. How are we going to patrition Macedonia and Albania, if you're led by a homosexual?

Seriously, the tears of Golden Dawn and the rest of the groups who are proud of participating in Srebrenica will be delicious. A bit surprised to be honest, as I thought that violent protests against the Belgrade Gay Pride occured regularly.

Nice record, considering that in the supposedly most westernised society of the Balkans (Croatians excluded and Slovenians are Germans), there has never been a single homosexual politician, although I suspect that not all of them were 100%, when it comes to their sexual orientation.

We'll know she's doing well once Fragony responds to her name with weird and mean epithets.

Macedonia we can talk about, but Albania? Have you actually seen Albania?

Don't despair. The problem is that they became independent way too early, without fully appreciating the benefits of Western colonialism. Easterners are very impatient!

Οnce their territories are annexed, they will immediately appreciate the fruits of progress. For example, I don't know about the Serbs, but Greeks are already very experienced at milking picturesque coastlines, until they enviromentally collapse.
Ιf the nature rudely insists, there is always the burning option.

How quaint. Alas that fad's outdated, we're onto our first vampire PM now.
Being better than the worst does not inherently make you good. But being better than the rest lets you brag.

Yeah, that's something women have wanted for ages - getting into parliament! So often we see the whole list of candidates are women, yet still the man is elected. Women bemoaning that if only they were able to vote they'd all choose someone from the sisterhood...

Other "glass ceilings" we could try to break:

Rape accusers and accused are both given anonymity until after the trial
Parental leave to be split as opposed to up to a year for women and 2 weeks for men.
Fathers get equal access to their children in divorce
Potential fathers have equal say over abortions - or if the woman elects to go it alone has no financial obligations (and no rights to the child either).

But let's focus on the number of female CEOs!!!!

An enemy that wishes to die for their country is the best sort to face - you both have the same aim in mind.

Even though there are areas in which men are discriminated against, on the whole, women are in much tougher position.

In this particular case, I wasn't glad that she was gay or a woman, but rather that it didn't stop her from getting the job. Out of the 6-7 names that were in the hat, she was the best candidate, and there were conservative elements that wanted her out of the mix because she was a single, childless and gay woman.

Being single probably helped. If Irinej saw her kissing her girlfriend, we would lose the patriarch from heart attack.

I agree - but in the 1st world it isn't that clear cut. Yes there are more men who are CEOs. But there are both few men who are CEOs and also this is not the be all and end all in the world.

@Crandar, kissing her girlfriend wouldn't be met with applause in the Netherlands either, just not ready for that even here
