What could we possibly get from yet another lander on Mars?
Before we send any people to Mars, NASA thinks it might be nice to know more about quakes on Mars.
In addition, they want to measure the magnetic field and take the patients temperature:

I didn't see anything about cameras so maybe we won't get pretty pictures.

We probably don't need any pictures. Ground level data about the magnetic field on the surface (type, level, variability of radiation getting through the atmosphere); temperature patterns on potential landing zones; seismic activities -- all of these are pretty important info for where, how, and with what we should construct a station there.

We already have enough photos to suggest that it need not be a trading post.
