Maybe it's related to a thing I discovered a while ago, a way to cheat back...

When you are under seige it is possible to sally, whittle down the enemy numbers then withdraw back inside for the 'draw'. When you're back on the camp map, if you quick-save then reload, the game 'forgets' you've sallied, so you can sally again... and again.... and again...

I think we've established pretty well that the game, especially on Very Hard, cheats. Those stacks don't come up out of nowhere.

That isn't really a secret, though. There's several old posts from the developers, explaining some of the bonuses the A.I. gets (though I can't remember if these related to S:TW, M:TW or R:TW).
