Default Re: Rampage Out of Space

    Night Three

Eschadoctor Lewwyn was proud of his achievements in service of UMEN. The internal consensus placed him at the top of his field. He had even been nominated for a Secret Nobel Prize in [redacted] 3 years ago. It was understandable that he would be embedded in the UMENSES support element, to manage the technical parameters of the translocation equipment that enabled the whole operation.

It was less sensible to include such a valuable person with the incursion directly into the Bionic underground complex. But as one of the few survivors of his team, and the only person present who could manipulate the Iron Curtain device - from an even-more-experimental branch of the translocation tech - his sense of duty carried him down with the Marines.

Fear quickly led him to make very public demonstration of the Iron Curtain, once the chaos began in the icy slick hallways of the facility. As expected, the device only had capacity for a single use. Hopefully it had given UMENSES the cutting edge it needed to finish the job.

    ...

Lewwyn slept near the commander's unit, for maximum security. There would only be time for a single move before the camp was alerted.

His unarmored body lost the structural integrity to gasp as the Infiltrator's nanoblade bisected him.

Lieutenants CutePanda and NANOOK had not been getting much love from their brothers-in-arms lately. They seemed to flit on the outskirts of the task force, and the latter had in public view contributed to the death of a good and beloved Marine, Lieutenant Garden Gnome.

And so they were assigned guard posts with their squads at the entrances to the armory.

After long hours on the watch, their professionalism did not permit boredom or fatigue to deter their vigilance. Thus they first noticed the spreading exhalation of phosphorescent mist around them. At a signal all guns came at the ready behind the barricades.

The unlanguage echoed soundlessly from a point nowhere. Nanook detonated the explosive traps ahead of the barricade, raising the whole contingent to alarum.

One of the men looked to CutePanda.

Sir, what the hell is going on? Orders?

But CutePanda had been quiet for a while now, gently vibrating all throughout his taut body. As the seconds passed, the mist seemed to inhere to him with greater prominence, or rather resonate in him. By the twinkles of the flames from the explosion, they could see a vibrant sort of delicious color dance beneath his skin.

Other Marines tottered with their gaze transfixed ahead. Those who still had some presence of mind started firing off into CutePanda's figure.

A few screaming indescribable moments later, nearly all the hundred surviving Marines had mobilized to the scene.

A few thought they noticed a strange mist, but at a second glance it was nothing but smoke from the fires. Only the hidden Bionics in the assembly quivered as a growl passed through the ranks.

Of the men at the guard post only something like ashy topsoil remained, like that from a particularly-rancid Superfund site.

No one was looking at that yet, as they first accounted for what remained of Lieutenant Nanook.

He alone, it seemed, had at some point taken to fleeing towards the main body.

Major Montmorency knelt down to his form sprawled out on the ground fewer than 10 meters from the scene. Nanook feebly scratched at the floor as the Major watched.

He could not touch it, but looked horrifiedly into the distorted parody that had been a face.

What was it, Lieutenant—what was it? he whispered, and the cleft, bulging lips were just able to crackle out a final answer.

But that was all. That which spoke could speak no more because it had completely caved in.

There was indeed a terrible monster on the loose. Surveying the carnage before them, the Marines felt for the first time chilled to the core. Could even the very best of UMEN - lose here?

Maybe clues could be found in the Bionic labs and research section..

You are one of those mad scientist freaks whom the Unified Marines quietly employ in their most covert research facilities.
Trained in the field of advancing UMEN's technological primacy as a fighting force, your mastery of cutting-edge superweapons led to your deployment with the strike force.
It is rumored that the Iron Curtain device you supervise was in part reliant on alien technology in its development.
Use your skills as part of the UMENSES signals/intel detachment - or what's left of it - to support the strike element in eradicating the Bionics.

You are a unique variant of roleblocker (Town). You win when all threats to your mission are eliminated. Vote in the thread every day to liquidate potential threats.

Iron Curtain: Once in the game, submit orders to stop and fast-forward a whole Night phase; all other actions, including kills, are nullified. Cannot be used N1. The Iron Curtain cannot be stopped, so choose your timing carefully for decisive effect.

I think that Panda dying is a slight indication that Vroe and Laurentus aren't both anti-town.

I want full reads lists from Csargo and Ibn-Khaldun.

I want to engage with HK more today

    Just a fluff note.

Sometimes writeups detail aspects or views of faces. Usually it is safe to assume that helmets are unsealed in those scenes.

If Dolby is mafia I will be very surprised. The way Tim interacted and pushed them day one made me town read Dolby very hard, especially since I had n0 checked Tim as wolf. Dolby being SK and mafia possibly knowing this is not something I will take off the table. Also since I don't want to miss the chance to ask, who dou you are think I should check for being a mafia tonight before flips?

Before I start solving, I should clarify that I misunderstood one detail of my role previously on. Basically, I need my neighbor to send in the same scan order in order to get 100% true result. And I can get a new neighbor if the old one dies. I should get in touch with one of you later. I'm not sure if sharing this is a good idea, but I think that in our current situation and with my role outed, transparency is important.

So, let's take a look at where I was at yesterday:

town: Winston, HK, Borg, Laurentus, Ibn
    poe: Csargo, Vroe, Dolby

From my town, I especially need to take a better look at Borg, make a proper read on Ibn and actually check in detail HK's activity. Laurentus and Winston are the only two firm core members.
Csargo's Nanook vote looks way worse after both wagons flipped town. I don't see many reasons for Csargo to be town. Also, there was almost no pressure on him - and mafia is usually trying to miselim him.
Vroe is up and down for me.He made some good comments and some terrible comments and his presence feels off. Like he's not been actively trying to solve the game with his comments, just showcasing solving.
    Dolby's not town here.

    Vote: Csargo

I think I can agree with your stance on Csargo, but as a follow-up, why isn't Dolby Town?

hollowkatt - Coming around to the idea that HK is the SK. Would make sense for him to go after Nanook and Tim. That leaves me wondering though: Would the Wolves fear Lewwyn more than a potential SK who has decently town-sided? I think this is likely in a world where the Wolves are resting comfortably out of the PoE.

Dolby - Still maintain this slot could be scum from the distancing between him and Tim.

Winston Hughes - Hey, if Cap and Lewwyn said Town, then Town. I fully expect Cap to be the next factional kill, which would confirm this slot.

Ibn-Khaldun - I remember nothing from this slot, will need to ISO.

BorgPicard - Eh, still like this slot because of D1 interactions with Tim, but really don't like that he seems to have disappeared.

Csargo - Can echo Cap's thoughts here.

Laurentus - This guy is open wolfing.

Vroendal - I've been putting him through a series of reaction tests, and he's come to all the wrong conclusions. He rightly points out that I'm playing very different from my usual town style, but then TRs me for it. I tell him I'm death tunneling him if Gnome flips town, and he tries to switch at the last possible second. He even calls my vote bad when at the time I made it, there were no serious counter-wagons. I can agree my reasoning is shaky, since I'm ignoring literally everything else that Dolby is doing because I'm so fixated on the distancing angle, but I also repeatedly said Gnome still had to be the chop. Also note that literally everyone on the Dolby wagon is confirmed Town at this point, except for me. His firm "I ain't dyin'" stance feels like taunting, at this point. You know who doesn't fear the NK? Scum, that's who.

pzelda - If this slot doesn't die soon, I'm killing it with fire, because why on earth would the Wolves risk keeping it around? But he can be town for now. It also literally just registered to me that this is Cap, lol.

So my PoE currently looks like: Dolby/Csar/Vro, with room for HK, Ibn, and Cap if he doesn't die soon. Can throw Borg on here too.

Okay, putting it like that has made me realise there's still a shit load of solving to be done here.

I'm re-evaluating my estimation of what happened during the night.

HK was not a fan of Panda in the last day phase, so could well have shot there. But then that still makes me think the second night kill was random and coming from scum. There's no way scum shoots Nanook, either.

Dolby wouldn't worry about Nanook coming after him here if he's scum, would he? Nanook doesn't have enough of a thread presence to push it. At that point, it would make far more sense to kill me. So this has to be a random kill, or it came from some weird town role (don't listen to that Wolf Dolby, don't out yourself if you exist), or it was the SK (and if it was the SK, I'm still hella confused who could have gone for Panda.

On the other hand, the fact that people now knew Panda's circumstances, and the fact that we had people like Dolby willing to sheep our town read of him, might make me underestimate how much the Wolves could have judged their odds of lynching him during the day. Which is weird, because I still wasn't going to take him to endgame when compared to some of the more solvey players. So bad move killing Panda if it was you, Wolfies.

From the sounds of it, the Wolves have an extra killing power. I'm guessing the SK shot Nanook, thinking they'd get another scum hit. Lewwyn was the obvious choice for a factional kill, but I can't make sense of why they'd wanna kill Panda
He was practically lynch bait. Perhaps this monster from the flavour is a wolf aligned random killer?

    Night Four
    -

As pzelda sleuthed around the bivouac - something the Major had warned him against of late, no longer being able to guarantee his safety - he reflected on the arc of his career. He was turning 40 today, retiring him from conscription eligibility. How sour that his card had been called in for this special operation just a month before. He'd taken down plenty of bionics on the mean streets of the megacities before with his hard-boiled tactics, but this shit was way beyond his pay grade. The whole time, among these armored warrior and their insane version of military justice, he had felt out of place, superfluous. Now that Lewwyn was dead, the mad lad, it felt like all prospect of teamwork had faded. He could only hope that tonight he would make a difference.

His reverie was interrupted by the presence of two hulking figures parked right before him. Zelda didn't need his skills or tech to see that these were primetime Bionics.

So this was it for him. Too late for help or safety.

Your reputation is distasteful to us, creep, one of them intoned.

Zelda straightened his back in resolve of his fate.

I've seen things you borgs wouldn't believe. Vagrant mech-addicts set on fire off the shoulder of the I-99. I watched gamma beams glitter in the dark near the Neo-New York Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Suddenly, pzelda seized with apprehension, looking closely at the mocking fragments the Bionics still wore.

    No, it's not, it can't! -

    Time to die.

The Bionics didn't even twitch as pzelda crumbled to the floor in sizzling pieces.

    —————————————————————————————————⠀”——————————————————————————

Major Montmorency knew this was it. The final confrontation was at hand, amid near-total disaster for UMENSES. Final destination: the station command center - if they could even make it before being picked off.

If any recovery were possible, the decisive confrontation would take place there.

    But first...

The men who had assembled to depart the antechamber awaited their commander's address.

Marines, as you know, our support team has been eliminated. pzelda got frazzled last night, under our noses, the damnfool. He was supposed to be under escort!

Despite that failure, the situation may not be unsalvagable. The Major held up the spook's tablet.

His last work was found on this device, among his effects. The unlocked Welcome Screen had a notification from his Investigation app! It said:

    Scan:
    Result: CSARGO UMENSES

    Detective

Your cybernoir career has been built on providing the very best record in tracking and exposing illicit Bionic presence in our cities.
The Unified Marines knew of your reputation and have invoked your Citizen's Conscription Service clause only a month before your retirement from eligibility.
Use your skills as part of the UMENSES signals/intel detachment - or what's left of it - to support the strike element in eradicating the Bionics.

You are a parity scanner (Town). You win when all threats to your mission are eliminated. Vote in the thread every day to liquidate potential threats.

Investigate: Select someone to visit at night to discover whether their alignment is pro or anti-UMENSES. Your technology is limited in its capacity to detect such advanced taggants; your first scan will have results delayed by a round, and every third scan will also be delayed (i.e. N1 results come D3 instead of D2, and expect N3 and N6 scans to be delayed).

Overmatched (passive): You must also partner with another player to achieve your full potential. Do this by getting into private contact with any player - the host must always be CCed - and having them submit matching orders on the target. Once you begin partnering on scans, you must continue to partner with the same player for as long as they are alive (no shopping around). You may always choose to go it alone on any given night, but your results will be as little as half as reliable. The same penalty applies if your partner does not properly submit matching orders.
Networked (passive): You start with a private commlink with Lewwyn (you are Neighbors). [REDACTED]
Stand Down (passive): When all bionics have been eliminated your abilities are retired. Any result you were about to receive at the time will be cancelled.
Dead Man's Hand (passive): Despite the technical limitations of your gear, there is a special fiducial that for some reason can only be registered in moments of extreme peril. If you die, the host will announce your earliest pending result publicly the following day-phase (i.e. dying D2/N2 releases your N1 investigation D3). If you die without any queued results pending, your last reported result will be announced. If your last target under these circumstances is also dead, the Dead Man's Hand will simply fail (such as in the case when you die N4 but your N3 and N4 targets have also died by SOD5). Dead Man's Hand is subject to the effects of Stand Down.
