I know in the strategy guide it says units within 50m of the general get 1 morale bonus for every command star and those more than 50m away get 1 morale bonus for every 2 command stars but is there more to it then just morale?

Is there some other bonus to battle?

I believe, units get +1 valor for every 2 stars the general has. Valor raises the attack and defense bonuses for all units.

Valour raises attack & defence by 1. "natural" Valour also brings 2 morale per point, but generals valour only does for who is nearby(explained above).

+1 in attack means your killing probability gets up by 20/100(whatever the value, it's exponential). +1 in defence makes enemy's probability down by 20/100.
War is not about who is right, only about who is left

Having a point of view upon everything is good
Having a view upon every point is better

Um, I don't think I am using this bonus from proximity to general enough. I tend to leave my general in a central location on the battlefield, but 50m does not sound much (if your general is behind a line of spear units, how many spear units would be affected? 1? 3? Presumably not 5?)

Maybe I should move my general more to where the critical point is. Rather like Wellington at Waterloo. Easy enough to do when they are in unit of royal knights.

The game manual says a general with high command improves the valor of the army, not just his unit so how high is high?
And by how much is it improved?

The strat guide only mentions morale but the manual hints at valor.

Can someone give concrete evidence to this?

Pretty sure what people said in this thread is right: 1 valour increase for 2 command stars of your general. Try it on the strategic map: stack a unit with a good general and look at the unit's valour in the top right hand corner of the unit picture. Take the unit out of the stack and examine the unit again. It will have a lower valour.

What I did not appreciate is El-Slapper's point, that the morale bonus from the extra valour due to leadership depends partly on proximity. I knew there was a morale bonus from proximity to the general, but assumed it was on top of that from valour (natural and leader augmented). I may check this out on the battle field (there is function key that shows your units stats, IIRC).
