Remains to be seen whether it's Medieval 3, as most people want, or something different. Maybe Empire 2. Or Pike & Shot. Or maybe World War 1.

All of these ideas aside, I think the next historical TW will make or break the way Total War is being viewed, at least by the old guard / historical fans. It might actually need to be split into 2, historical games with the Total War moniker and maybe fantasy ones with the Total Fantasy name.

The end of year letter from the team to the fans. Expect some new about new releases towards the end of next year, so we have at least 8-10 months of waiting. We will get a new game announcement probably at that point.

2 things I do want to highlight here:

    • The Total War ‘launcher’ will be removed: I believe we all want a seamless Total War experience, and the launcher is a hindrance to that. We’re working on a plan to remove its requirement but want to ensure we have a Mod Management system in place before doing so. I’m not sure when this is coming but we are actively working on it.
    • Factions will no longer be an early-adopter bonus: This has been a divisive inclusion for past releases, so we want to ensure that what we're offering appeals to more players. If you like to support us through pre-orders, we will still ensure some form of bonus such as discounts, but as always, we are interested in hearing your suggestions through our community forums.

Medieval 3 would be the obvious commercial choice. Medieval 2 was released 19 years ago and there would be a whole generation who had never player a TW game in that era. Insane when you think about it - I recall when RTW and M2TW were the "new" games.

While that would be the obvious choice, are we sure it's also the best choice? Given that Total War has been hyperfocused on the fantasy side of things, returning with a massive historical game after almost a decade is going to divide fans. Our community already is, so remains to be seen what's going to happen.

I do want a new historical game badly, it's been a decade almost as I've mentioned, and while Pharaoh is nice to play, I miss the old games significantly. Attila was very solid, Shogun 2 was great / brilliant, and obviously Medieval 2 and Medieval 1 are legendary.
