Default How to beat Jinetes with just infantry

    Hello,

I'm trying to beat an army of (almost) only Jinetes with an Almohad army with just infantry, but I can't figure out how to deal with the Jinetes speed; it seems impossible to pin them down. However, when I auto-resolve the battle it's always a win for me. (I'm guessing that this is a hint that it should be doable to beat them myself as well.)

    My army:
    2 Desert archers
    7 Almohad Urban militia
    2 Urban militia
    5 Peasants
(Reinforcements: 1 Urban militia, 1 Peasants)

    Them:
    11 Jinetes
    1 Peasants

Any advice on how to engage Jinetes with infantry?
I have been trying things like hammer/anvil and flanking since I have more units, but they are so freakin' fast that it very quickly goes wrong.

It's been a while, but I think it might be doable. What is the battlefield terrain, and are you attacking or defending? If possible, get your troops in trees, and let the Jinetes waste their javelins throwing into cover. Once they are out of ammo (6 shots), you will not be able to catch them, but you might be able to herd them if you manage your lines and pin them in terrain/edges. In melee they are not very good, and don't have a good charge, so you might be able to get away with stretching your lines thin to cover more area. When spread, use the peasants to block gaps, but do not group them together. Manage your fatigue, do not try charging or running after them unless they are in danger of breaking contain. With the archers, make sure they are protected, and I would say target the general's unit if possible. Don't stretch them too thin, their target unit needs to be in range for all men in the unit. Killing off the general may help you out.

"Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win" ~ Sun Tzu

Fighting Jinetes is much like fighting horse archers. They are set to skirmish mode and will fight like that for much of the time until you expose a flank, then they may charge... and then pull out of the charge if you order the unit to attack, and then go back to skirmishing. This could go on until your units are exhausted. They also tend to slip out of most "hammer and anvil" attempts. You could form a wall of AUM in loose formation and then place the Desert Archers behind, but by my estimates, you will run out of arrows, before your two units could decimate those 11. I would only waste arrows hitting the general's unit if you could trigger a rout and you had sufficient units of Saharan Cavalry to chase down the routers. If you managed to trigger a mass rout, from attacking the peasants and killing the general, the Jinetes would likely rally and be back harassing your units again in no time.

As it stand, without light cavalry and/or Berber Camels, and with insufficient archers, I wouldn't fight that battle.
