AAR Battle of Pergamon ~ 290 BC. Ptloemaic v Getai scum. Having painstakingly battled our way back into Southern Anatolia and pushed back the usurper Pergamon Kingdom from our foremer lands in Caria we took the battle to them. The best general , a Rhodian 4* veteran commanded the force that easily overwhelmed the poorly garrisoned Pergamon. Out recaptured cities of Hallicarnasos and Miletus were defended adequately w 1/2 stack armies and Side , a gift for Pergamon to secure and earlier pace deal, which they now no doubt regret, had 2/3 stack force. Rhodes itself provided a good source of reinforcements as well as a powerful navy to blockade the western seaboard of Anatolia. All plans were in place to wipe out Pergamon once and for all. Then , for no apparent reason, Getae crossed the Hellespont with 2 armies, King and Heir. They besieged Pergamon before I could rush reinforcements up. 1200 men to my 650. Fortunately they were not smart enough to combine into 1 massive force. The king assaulted main gate w all sige equipment whilst the heir had his army parked at the other side of the city. They lacked siege gear so spectated only. I positioned my lithobolus on that side and took pot shots at their stationary, cavalry heavy force. The rest of my forces focused on repelling the kings forces. I had the cavalry sally out and harrass their ladder carriers and then circle around to to similar to their cavalry. Archers and Thureophoroi pummeled them from the ramparts. Phalanx boys awaited any breakthrou on the steets below. My cavalry had success and wittled down the infantry numbers before dricing the Getae cavalry form the field. After 15 min of hard slogging on the wall their troops had seen enough steel and blood and began to withdraw. My cavalry,
returning from dispatching the Getai king, caught the routing troops and made short work of them. Now with ~ 400 troops left we turned to face the Heir's forces. My lithobolus had been lighting up the evening sky with flaming projectiles but had scored very few hits. How then to defeat the large cavalry of the Getai in the field. All missile troops , who hadn't exhausted their supply of projectiles, were positioned on the walls above the eastern gate. Light troops sallied out to entice the enemy forwards. Quickly following were the small remaining squads of phalangites and Thureophoroi, now down to swords. The Getai took the bait and foolishly charged in in small contingents , which the phalangites were able to pin down, all the while with missile support from above. Despite the contrast in tactical skill the Getai were beginning to win the day thru weight of numbers. Time for the Rhodian and his royal guard to sally forth and lend a hand. He inspired the troops thru trumpet and deed as he smashed into some Getai horse archers. Despite his gallant display the contest hung in the balance for another few minutes before the besiegers turned away , in search of easier prey. Entire battle took 1 hour and was probably the most memorable of any TW battle I've played. And I've been into TW since Medieval 1. This mod is a masterpiece. ?
