Has this ever happened to anyone else. This is so annoying. When you have selected say 6 units of men and you go to click on group and you accidently click on rout, its so irritating. It should say 'Are you sure you want to rout?', but instead your men run for their lives

I hit 'G' rather then use the mouse to group units.

me too the buttons on top of the screen take ages to scroll to so I just click G instead

I've been in the formation selection screen, clicked something more than I should, and before I realize it, half my army is routing.
I've only done this once, and I was able to rally most of them, but a "would you really like to run away" option would be nice, if done in a such a way as to not clutter anything.
Here's a suggestion:
Hold down CTRL button on keyboard, left-click on units you want to group.
When all units are selected, press G key on keyboard.
To ungroup, press G key again.
