    Question

Is there any way to increase the chances of snow?

I had a Winter battle yesterday, it was a great suprise. I just wish they happened a little more frequently. Is it possible to increase the chances of the battle being in winter by modding the game, or would it need a little patch from the good people at CA?

I think I read somewhere that this is decided by which music is playing when you hit end of turn. If you look in the ingame music directory, you will notice there are sound files titled spring, summer etc.. they will be played in succession as background music on your strategic map, so you have to wait until the winter tune is playing then hit it off.

I believe you have to fight 3 battles in the same year first and the 4th one will be a winter one. It rotates for each battle, the first is spring, second is summer, third is autumn, and the fourth ends up being winter.

I havent heard on any confirmation but i speculate thats how it works. Test for yourself.

but it's possible to have more than 4 battles per campaign year, so what would happen then? you can't have more than 3 season changes within a year

I'm sure it'll just rotate around again.

In a single year, each battle is supposed to take place in a different season, starting in spring, so the fourth battle should be in winter. Unfortunately, owing to a bug, so is the fifth, and the sixth, and the seventh...

I know this would require some work, but there should be a chance of snow in both Spring and Autumn seasons in northern areas of the campaign map.

    Hey, gil is here

Thanks for the info all. Now I know why winter battles are so rare. I'd like to see more.

4 battles in one turn usually means 2 battles that I didn't expect..or prepare for

It makes sense though. If you were going to go to war, you'd probably pick the spring so you had a good chance of decent weather ahead of you. You may even leave yourself time for a second campaign in the summer if the spring goes well.

Nice to see Gil is still lurking about. Thanks for the contributions.

Fighting a war on 4 fronts isnt very good strategy... i tend to go slow and steady. And even if i did go mad, the likelihood of several of the battles not actually occurring due to AI retreating is pretty high. In all the campaigns i have played I have yet to encounter a snow battle - if i hadnt read about its existence on these forums i'd have assumed that seasons just weren't in the game at all.

This is a great shame, as i'm sure you guys at CA put a lot of work into making it look nice. And to be honest, as far as i'm concerned you wasted your time

So - how about a change to this making it into the VI expansion, e.g:

For the first battle in a year give a 70% chance it will be spring, 10% chance each of summer, autumn, winter. For the second battle, a 70% chance it will be summer...etc, etc. If there's already a bug in this code it'll need fixing anyway... right?

Just so that we occasionally get to *see* the fruits of all of your hard work. (its nice for us too - we get a bit more variation in gameplay).

Looking at the VI screenies that have come out so far, there seems to be much more snow. That could just be the screenies that have been released rather than it occouring more often.

    Maybe Gil can enlighten us.

Ahhhhhhhh...that makes sense of it all now. No wonder I see so much snow late in the game when I fight ~7 battles or so per turn. No wonder that it rains ALL the time in the other European battles...I thought it was because the programmers were from the UK, LOL. Any chance that this will be randomized a bit more next time around (Viking Invasions, hint, hint.) I would expect in Europe that most campaigns would be in the spring or summer with a few "late starters" in the fall, but rarely in winter because it would have been difficult to feed invading armies in winter. Not to mention that in many places it's too darned cold for moving large numbers of men about.

But do auto-resolved battles count or do I have to fight three battles myself to see snow in the fourth?

Why is it that when I post the exact same topic (twice, in two different forums), not a single soul responds, but when some else does a whole plethora of people rush to post? Anyway, my suggestion was that somebody creates of mod that changes the rotation of seasons from the 4 battles per season into each season occurring on a certain turn. Just an idea.

Contemplating the demand of more snow again, I have to say I'm all for it. Legalise it

    question

does autocalculate one battle also count as one season?
When the AI retreats, does it also count?

What I mean is, have 4 battles in one year, autocalculate the first 3, then the 4the one should be winter. Am I correct?

    Silencer,

Why don't you just try setting it up and test it? Attack four provinces in a temperate/lush climate. Autocalc the first three then fight the 4th to see if it snows.

I've never auto-calculated a single battle, so I can't say if it counts as a "used season", but I do know for sure, that AI retreating does not count.

One thing which seems to further reduce the likelyhood of snow is that the battles taking place in the north generally seem to be resolved first with the computer working it's way south, and generally also from west to east. This means, that if you're fighting all over the map, the last battles are likely to be in warm areas were you won't even get snow in winter.
